Ash Wednesday Posted February 22, 2005 Posted February 22, 2005
George Washington - First in War, First in Peace, First in the Hearts of his Countrymen! I was reading about a similar poll of presidents among American students which showed Washington coming in like 6th or 7th (behind both Clinton and George W. Bush), and also that most American kids know very little about the Father of Our Country. I think this is a shame.
What's even scarier is that they recognize Ronald McDonald before they recognize past presidents. I voted for Reagan. The guy just had too much charisma for me to vote otherwise. He made me feel "safe" as a kid (and I realize this is probably just rosy nostalgia) and most of all he loved jelly beans. Gotta dig that. As for presidents not in my memory I'd probably vote for Washington.
Iacobus Posted February 22, 2005 Posted February 22, 2005
I certainly didn't expect that VeraMaria and I would choose the same president, and that that president would be Hoover. And yes, poor Cal, I would have gone with him but for my college loyalties. I totally disagree with those who criticize Hoover and Cal because the "didn't do anything". That's exactly why I like them. For the most part, I think new federal legislation and programs hurt America. FDR's policies, far from bringing us out of the Depression, probably extended it. Here's an interesting graph supporting VeraMaria's teacher: Note that JFK is by far the most overrated president and Hoover is one of the most underrated. Also, Reagan is the most underrated and the second most overrrated. Why not bring in Cato or Heritage?
Anastasia13 Posted September 9, 2005 Posted September 9, 2005 Carter or an undecided someone from long ago.
Totus Tuus Posted September 9, 2005 Posted September 9, 2005 For me it's just about tied between Ronald Reagan and George Washington. I voted for Mr. Washington.
Captain_Fantastic Posted September 11, 2005 Posted September 11, 2005 Even though I'm a democrat, I really like Ronald Reagan. I still miss him
Nathan Posted September 11, 2005 Posted September 11, 2005 Ronald Reagan was the man. For that basic and simple fact, I had to choose him. Second choice: The current prez, George W. Bush.
