RemnantRules Posted February 28, 2005 Posted February 28, 2005 Well it's for Movies and music BUT I just call it media b/c well we put everything up there...
argent_paladin Posted February 28, 2005 Posted February 28, 2005 I put my tv in the closet for lent. And I don't really miss it. I think TV is ok, but it is usually not the best thing for you to be doing at that moment. I don't think God is calling us to watch the Simpsons. Rather, we are called to love our neighbor, to know and love God, to pray to visit the sick and the lonely, etc. I guess if we have done all those things and have some time left over, we can watch tv. As for using TV as ministry, I think that is an excuse more often than not. I lived in a priory and priests really did watch tv or movies to get a sense of the culture. But I think if we examined our true intentions, we are watching for enjoyment or for an end to boredom rather than truly as a ministry for the Church.
JP2Iloveyou Posted February 28, 2005 Author Posted February 28, 2005
And how exactly do you expect to reach anyone when you can't relate to anyone? Sure, Homer is often drunk. But you know what? Homer has also been placed in temptation to cheat on Marge many times - and he never does. He doesn't act on his temptation in any way. There are valuable lessons to take away from the Simpsons that you can use to evangelize.
I don't see how not watching the Simpsons limits my ability to relate to anyone. There are also valuable lessons I can take away from sitting with a young woman who I am attracted to, by ourselves, in a dark room, for example, not putting myself in an occasion of sin, but it doesn't follow from that that I should go do it. I really see no moral good that can come from the Simpson. Everything we do either brings us closer to God or further away from him. Nothing is neutral. I really don't see how the Simpson's brings us closer to God.
