Here's the thing about Nazis. Membership in the Nazi party did not mean that you subscribed to the ideals of Adolf Hitler. Ratzinger wasn't even a Nazi party member. He was a kid. To oppose the party was to invite death or at least persecution. How many of you sterling young people would oppose a juggernaut if it meant your death? It seems like some people here have already capitulated to the juggernaut of relativism that has swept the West. I submit that it takes a special type of person to be a hero/martyr, and most of us wouldn't measure up. So stop posturing.

You people need to look at what the man has done since he grew up. He was a principle player in Vatican II, so you show your ignorance every time you attempt to insinuate that he might repeal it or something stupid like that.

and if you feel like your being attacked, you're giving yourself too much credit. you're being corrected, because we're Preaching Holy Apostolic Truth, yo. Accept it or move along little doggy.
He spelled it "psychi" originally. I found it ironic that he is claiming his knowledge of psychology as his basis, but doesn't spell the word properly. At the same time, this is now the third semester I've taken a psych course and I know very well that it is far from an exact science. There are many more factors than just "he belonged to a Nazi group as a child, and is therefore a Nazi with Nazi tendencies."

I agree. Psychology is like a half-science. The trend to ignore the spiritual only hinders the application. God is the best psychologist.

i don't see the point in arguing over this-he is the Pope, you can't do anything about it, so deal with it and get on with life :)

that is true; I think that this is only the beginning, though. We need to pray, as God knows what he's doing past, present, and future, and we can only see past and present for one individual; ourselves. We need to trust him.

Indeed. It's interesting that you would mention that. If we look at today's youth and teens -- we express great concerns about the ones that are seduced by neo-Nazi or KKK movements. We hold nothing against the kids themselves, we work very hard to protect these kids. If we have a teenager involved in cult activity today, we would view him as being an unfortunate victim who needs to be liberated.

Aside from it being a law, kids back then didn't even have any civil rights or advocacy groups to speak up for them like they do now. :sadder:

I've seen the photo of him as a Hitler Youth and I think it's a really depressing photo, because to me he looks downright miserable and not particularly all that "fired up for the Führer." If this was 2005 we'd be feeling sorry for this boy and wanting to help him. But instead people want to somehow villainize him -- usually it's not about an objective fact. It's because they just don't like the man from the get go as an adult.

I think a lot of the issues of the Nazi party are very hard for a lot of Germans over 65. I think most, if not all of them, would also differentiate between having served in the Hitler Youth, or the Wehrmacht, and actually having been a bona fide Nazi.

Even from a strictly theological standpoint -- the Ratzinger household was very staunchly Catholic and the theological tenets of Nazism that they would have found so odious would have been the Nazis subscription and encouragement of occultism and paying homage to the old pagan Norse and Germanic gods. The Nazis wanted to start their own "church" and had their own theological ideas. Some of the weddings of high Nazi officials are some of the creepiest rituals I have ever seen footage of. They were 100% pagan German.

I think about trying to raise my kids orthodox Catholic around a government like that, and no wonder his dad had them move. I'd move my kids to the boondocks, too.

Sorry I'm rambling, but I find WWII history and the dynamics of the times to be really fascinating.

people are just ignorant and don't want to learn cause their ignorance means they can talk ill of him. I just ignore those who are against him and I really do pity them for their ignorance, maybe we should try helping these people instead of battling against them, just a thought....

USA Today would disagree with you??? Where are you getting your info from??? Trying to claim that he is not a former Natzi is like trying to claim that this is not a forum

who cares what USA Today says?

Its okay to disagree with the choice but beaware who you are disagreeing with. You are not disagreeing with mere humans, but the Holy Spirit Himself.

Who are you or anyone to do that?

Pope Benedict is the Pope, live with it, if you chose to not like it your are going to be one sad person for the next 5-10 years. Its not going to change.

Guys keep in mind that the Church is going to get smaller because of this. And Im all for it. If you cant stand the Pope, Teachings and Faith, its time to leave.

Its time to have quality, not quantity in our Church.

I've been ready for this for years now. I'm actually looking forward to it, as bad as that sounds.

I know what you mean. I've seen some people online who are just.... unbelievable. I'm not talking about phatmassers or anyone here. Some of them, I have to wonder when I retort to what they say if I'm wasting my time.

I think one of the reasons why this has really become heated is because right now there is so much hatred and ignorance and slander towards the pope and it usually filters down to us, too (to summarize what some people have said: "your pope is a Nazi and a fascist, and you guys worship a Nazi, are you're kissing the ring of Hitler, the Church is corrupt and full of hate who hates gays and jews, and I can't believe you brain washed people stand for this") so I'm not surprised that a lot of us feel the need to be on defense.

Some of them I don't know what to do or say because it's like their ears are closed, but their mouths are wiiiiiiiiiide open!
