It positions Catholics as evil and Muslims as peaceful.

it is a new movie about the crusades..supposedly from both perspectives, but I heard, like StMichael said, that it pretty much made Christians as aggressors, doing it for personal gain and such, not to protect the Holy Land and Christians in it.

You can check out this site for a review of the film, discussing both its positive and negative aspects from a Christian perspective.

hey - thanks for linking up that review of this unfortunate movie

A few positive things I see about this movie:

1 - I am hopeful about a negative backlash (wishful thinking?)

and 2 - And there has been a longstanding misunderstanding about most if not all aspects of all the crusades --- this movie will spark dialogue and many people will want to know what really went on.
I, for one, just grabbed my copy of “the compact history of the Catholic Church” by Alan Schreck so I can read what he wrote on it later today. :)

I want to become a film maker and create a movie about the lies, deception and corruption of the secular world. Show about all the evil forces trying to destroy the church. I'll give them a history lesson.

it's also not like the muslims weren't threatening Christendom itself. People didn't have the same concept of life that we have today.

King Henry VIII ate dishes of daisies to relieve himself from his stomach-ulcer pain.

Part of the problem is everyday people do not have a very good grasp on the actual history - just the popular history. Frankly it surprises me that anyone tries to make historical fiction at all.

I saw it and didn't think it was that bad. It is the Muslims who are attacking the city of Jerusalem, filled with women and children and even Jews and Muslims. It is Balian, a Christian, who is the main hero, and King Baldwin IV, a Christian, is also seen as a kind, wise king. Guy de Lusignan really did lose that battle when he ran out of water (though he was smarter and better than the movie depicted him). Raynald really was not a nice guy and did attack caravans, against the King's orders.

The parts I had trouble with were that all Christians were either cynical agnostics or sincere zealots, with only a few exceptions. Also, the clergy were uniformly depicted as cowardly, without tact or honor, and only interested in themselves.

But, overall, especially considering what they could have done, it was a decent job and will get people more interested in this period of history. At least they had the Christians being the defenders, the good guys, while the Muslims were the attackers.

y boycott everything? If we got a big enough group to boycott it, all the controversy would give it more money. If the film maker thought the Christians were bad and the muslims were good during the war, then be it. To me the Crusades are history and we shouldn't be mad about whether a person says we did more or less evil than the muslims during the crusades.
