Guest Eremite Posted June 2, 2005 Posted June 2, 2005 Canon 844:
Whenever necessity requires it or true spiritual advantage suggests it, and provided that danger of error or of indifferentism is avoided, the Christian faithful for whom it is physically or morally impossible to approach a Catholic minister are permitted to receive the sacraments of penance, Eucharist, and anointing of the sick from non-Catholic ministers in whose Churches these sacraments are valid.
The last sentence is essential: the sacraments in that Church must be valid Protestant Churches do not have valid orders, and thus an invalid Eucharist. Hence, he can't receive.
Paphnutius Posted June 2, 2005 Posted June 2, 2005
Canon 844: The last sentence is essential: the sacraments in that Church must be valid Protestant Churches do not have valid orders, and thus an invalid Eucharist. Hence, he can't receive.
Please forgive my ignorance, but I thought that there was one or two of the protestant churches who had valid orders.
Guest Eremite Posted June 2, 2005 Posted June 2, 2005 There are no Protestant Churches with valid orders. Occasionaly, there are cases of some Anglican Bishops who were ordained by Orthodox bishops, and thus are validly ordained. But these are unique, rare cases. The Eastern Orthodox Churches have valid orders, however (as does the Polish National Catholic Church).

I had the Anglican church in mind. I call to mind this was actually discussed recently on a thread somewhere around here...sooo many pages of threads.

Extra ecclesiam nulla salus Posted June 2, 2005 Posted June 2, 2005 im not 100% about this but... if one is born into a non-catholic faith then they are not heretics they are just schismatic? or is that wrong?
That's wrong. It's like saying that Hindus aren't pagans because they were born pagan.
Paphnutius Posted June 2, 2005 Posted June 2, 2005 They are heretics, but it is a different type than most people think of. There is a distinction but I cannot think of the names.. Formal and something else. I am sure one of the others will be along shortly
KizlarAgha Posted June 2, 2005 Posted June 2, 2005
excuse my ignorance.
It's okay. Hope I didn't sound overly aggressive...but I usually do...
Fides_et_Ratio Posted June 2, 2005 Posted June 2, 2005 Formal and Material are the distinctions of heresy... However, I'd caution against the harsh language. Not entirely conducisive to Ecumenism. We can be more charitable than this...
