Think Again! This is one of the lamest excuses I've seen lately for explaining why kids should just go for it and have sex, "cause abstinence is hard"! Ummm, hello? and dealing with the emotional baggage, pregnancy, stds, etc that premarital sex brings is easier?
Tony Posted July 5, 2005 Posted July 5, 2005 geez its almost like they are trying to give them an excuse to "get it on"
kateri05 Posted July 5, 2005 Posted July 5, 2005 aww abstinence is hard, boohooo. you know what else is hard? life! get used to it. ugh, our society is going to poo
track2004 Posted July 5, 2005 Posted July 5, 2005 Though I do rather like the Abstinence programs I do think that they should talk about "safe sex" for one lecture because some kids will be sexual active and they should be aware of the risks involved. In reality no group of 30 kids in any given environment will all stay chaste until marriage and for the ones that don't they should know what is out there and how to protect themselves. I am not advocating handing out condoms or anything, but the subject of "safe sex" shouldn't be totally ignored.
Guest T-Bone Posted July 5, 2005 Posted July 5, 2005 Do you not realize that there are forces out there that do not want abstinence taught in any way, shape, or form?

There is no such thing as safe sex, except in a monogamous, life-time relationship. 2. Telling them "what's out there" IS an abstinence program because ultimately sex outside of marriage is not what will make them happy because it is not what they are called to be. 3. Rather than saying "Don't have sex, but if you do, use a condom (which doesn't work too well because kids only hear "use a condom") say "Don't have sex until you are ready to have children, which is a natural consequence of sex. If you are ready to have children with another person, get married first." Education for condoms should basically be "Don't use them, even if you are married. They are never permitted and tend to destroy love and marriage."

Children should be taught about the beauty of chastity and abstinence, which are both forms of the virtue of temperance.

Thy Geekdom Come Posted July 5, 2005 Posted July 5, 2005
Though I do rather like the Abstinence programs I do think that they should talk about "safe sex" for one lecture because some kids will be sexual active and they should be aware of the risks involved.
In addition to what's already been said: We call it "safe sex"...but sex isn't meant to be "safe" in the way it suggests. Chris Padgett, a Catholic speaker and musician, uses the phrase "procreation with reckless abandonment." We are supposed to abandon ourselves to God in sex, as well as to one another. Furthermore, "safe sex" shows forth a hidden agenda. Why "safe" sex and not "sex as it's meant to be"? It's the minimalist agenda in our country..."we're going to do everything half-heartedly, folks...we're going to have lots of sex, but we're going to make it 'safe' because we don't want to go so far as to experience it in its fulness...that's not convenient for us, so we're going to settle on the best we can get with the least responsibility involved."
Thy Geekdom Come Posted July 5, 2005 Posted July 5, 2005 You know, I didn't read the whole article, but they author definitely didn't have a proper view of what abstinence programs are supposed to feature: 1. Constant renewal of abstinence promises. 2. No sexual activity of any kind. Period. Abstinence programs don't work when people say a one time pledge and think they're saved (sounds similar to another concept floating around out there), nor do they work when you do everything but vaginal intercourse in an attempt to indulge, but not that much. We need fasting and prayer for discipline in this country.
Didacus Posted July 5, 2005 Posted July 5, 2005 You know, I could believe this article is actually a satire:
“Abstinence is complicated to use. It requires negotiation skills. Teens have to talk to their partners about it, and use it all the time—every time they’re intimate,” says Haignere.
Everytime they are intimate? If they practise abstinence, doesn't that mean they are NOT intimate? And who says its complicated? its as simple as 'don't touch'. My father had what I think is the ideal abstinence drug. Being a doctor he had several pictures of STD's in various stages of development with a detailed description of pains and symptoms felt by the patients. TALK ABOUT BEING SCARED STRAIGHT! The pictures where worst than any horror movies I've seen so far, and I've seen my share.
Theologian in Training Posted July 5, 2005 Posted July 5, 2005 Our Lady, Mother of purity, and example of abstinence, pray for us.
Old_Joe Posted July 5, 2005 Posted July 5, 2005 Oy boy. "safe" sex is basically saying that a person can have sex whenever they want just as long as they take "responsibility." That is very reckless. If it truly is liberating, why are there more problems associated with it? Problems such as divorce, STD's, abortion, not to mention all the emotional baggage that comes along for the ride? :irate: I just did a paper on premarital sex. We had to do a paper on a controversial topic and explore both sides of the issue. I got a lot of negative feedback. In fact one person said that my viewpoint was "negative and unnapproving." Granted, my paper does have it's problems, and I can fix those. the point I was trying to make is that sex is a wonderful, beautiful thing, but that abuse of it leads to serious problems.
Didacus Posted July 5, 2005 Posted July 5, 2005 You you be able to post your paper? I would be interested in reading it OldJoe.
geetarplayer Posted July 5, 2005 Posted July 5, 2005 That's almost as ridiculous as this. -Mark
Old_Joe Posted July 5, 2005 Posted July 5, 2005 I could. I'd like to polish it first though. A lot of people said that my arguments were good, but one sided, so I'd like to fix those. I should have it done by the end of the week.

1337 k4th0l1x0r Posted July 6, 2005 Posted July 6, 2005 I think the author of the article is right. In fact, the viewpoint should be extended to cover other problems facing people. We really can use this method to counter obesity. The best way to go from being obese to being fit is to 1) eat healthy and 2) exercise. We should, however, realize that people won't always hold to these two things and that 'safe eating' practices should be taught. First, it's not always easy to eat healthy. That banana split sometimes seems awfully tempting and while it's easy to say you won't go for it it's hard not to when you can smell the chocolate syrup on it. Go ahead, eat it. Just make sure to stick a finger down your throat afterwards and regurgitate it. I hope it's not too hard on your esophagus. Are you finding exercise to be tiring and you just can't handle any physical strain on your body? No problem, sit your lazy butt on the sofa all day and take speed. It will really up your metabolism with just a few side effects. You may want to consult your dentist every 3-6 months.
