TORONTO - Canada became the fourth country in the world to legalize gay marriage nationwide after a landmark bill was signed into law on Wednesday.

Supreme Court Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin signed the bill, and it was read in the House of Commons and Senate, making it law. The Senate voted late Tuesday to adopt the legislation to legalize gay marriage despite fierce opposition from Conservatives and religious leaders.

The bill grants same-sex couples legal rights equal to those in traditional unions between a man and a woman, something already legal in eight of Canada's 10 provinces and in two of its three territories.

The legislation drafted by Prime Minister Paul Martin's minority Liberal Party government easily passed the Senate, which essentially rubber stamps any bill already passed by the House of Commons, which passed it late last month.

The Netherlands, Belgium and Spain are the only other nations that allow gay marriage nationwide.

Note - this could lead to legal implications against the Church in Canada if they refuse to marry homosexual couples.

:( I hope it doesn't. Why can't people just leave Her alone? :club:

I don't think the Church is obligated to recognize gay marriages in places where it is already legal.

In any case, the church will never marry gays. If they do it would be some hokey government-recognized "state sanctioned" church like the one in China (one not recognized by the Vatican.)

In light of some of the things that could happen in Canada (the state restricts religious practice by certain laws, forcing the church to accept women priest and such), this could happen. The real Church would have to go underground.

Speaking of underground churches and communism, what pisses me off to no end is seeing college kids and youth wearing those stupid Che Guevara shirts.

Obviously these snotnosed kids are not young enough to remember the Cold War and have some glamorous view of Marxism and Communism. I'm sure the grandparents of these snotnosed kids must be REALLY proud.

Ya, I can see consequences coming for the church pretty soon. My sister is a lawyer nad she thinks the church will not be forced to do anything..I htink she's wrong.

Currently, the church is not froced to do anything by the goverment... but that is just for now...

And yes, there has been some protestant ministers who have been charged with hate speech in Canada because they spoke out against the bill of same sex marriage. None in the catholic that I know of right now, yet...

On a somewhat related note:
One of the real (Vatican approved) Chinese bishops has been given permission by the government to celebrate Mass... There was a picture of a huge Chinese cathedral in our diocesan newspaper recently.

ok im confused..maybe. so the canadian govt allows same-sex marraige. why would this change anything in a catholic church up there. do gay couples WANT to be married in a catholic church? do they want the catholic church to recognize their union? like.. as far as i know (and its probably not much) you dont get married in a church for the legal benifits. I guess its like.. why would anyone (liberals/gays) care who the catholic church marries and who it doesnt.

maybe im being really naive, and someone can help me understand their stupidity.

its like.. how bout the gays go start their own church if they want it that bad, and they can give eachother burgerking crowns and feel all special. /sarcasm

it just seems fishy to me that if all gays wanted was the various legal rights associated with marraige (rights that are given out by governments, and not churches) why dont they fight to change the prerequisites for those rights - instead of trying to screw up marraige, and get churches involved.

Yes, you are being a little naive. The gay movements is not about rights so much as it is about political power. And to obtain political power, one must debunk the higher authorities in order to take thier place.

Catholic Church = highest moral authority on earth, and thus the prime traget of attack. Remeber the rainbow sash?> Why do they care? Why would it make a difference to them if the Catholic Chruch grants them communion or not? It shouldn't, yet they make a huge deal out of it. The future of the church is as bright as ever, I believe in her holiness nad she will not fall. But the near future is dark and riddled in conflict, and sadly, all this are just signs of things to come. Everything will get worse, far worse, before they get any better.

That's just the point though. If they went and made their own church, they'd only be perpetuating their own seperation from the rest of society. They want to be married in the Church because they want to know that they are included. There's a gay movement going on within the Church right now. They are most well-know for their protests at Mass on Pentecost every year.

ok, well its comforting to know that that everyone else sees that what they say they want, and what they are trying to do are two totally different things. sometimes its just hard for me to believe people can be so outrageous and stupid. ya i have complete faith in the church too. It confounds me to think that anything would try to go against her.

sidenote: it makes me said when i see non-catholic "christians" having anti-gay rallies wherein they yell and scream at the gay communities and say they are unworthy and going to hell. apparently they missed the "love" aspect of christianity. and ofcourse everyone else assumes that all christians are the same, and thus catholics take the blunt of it. /sigh

to geetarplayer: what duh...see this is just the stupidity im talking about. how hard is it for a gay person to get that catholicism doesnt allow homosexuality, and it never ever ever will and no "law" or "govt" is going to change that.

Ya, I noticed the same thing too... seems that the Catholic church is held accountable for all christian denominations in the world :sadder:

Indeed, homosexuals wanting marriage not just part of law, but also in the church, do this not merely for the "right" but because they want to feel validated and they want approval of their actions (i.e. open practice of homosexual behavior).

Funny thing is they want their beliefs recongnized and accepted by they blind themselves to the facthat they are pushing to destroy someone else's belief and vision of the truth. They are the ones who cannot tolerate norr stand a different opinion - not the church.

I'll add one more thing: where is the movement for gay marriage within orthodox Judaism or Islam?
