Aloysius Posted July 24, 2005 Posted July 24, 2005 I saw Cardinal Arinze at St. Vincent's in Latrobe, PA, which was awesome, even got to talk with him a bit! now this is no big deal, just slightly surprised me, but definitely didn't ruin the whole experience or anything... you see... Redemptionis Sacramentum was put out by Arinze's congregation, so I was all ready to see absolutely no mistake from there... and there wasn't except one thing...
[92.] Although each of the faithful always has the right to receive Holy Communion on the tongue, at his choice,[178] if any communicant should wish to receive the Sacrament in the hand, in areas where the Bishops’ Conference with the recognitio of the Apostolic See has given permission, the sacred host is to be administered to him or her. However, special care should be taken to ensure that the host is consumed by the communicant in the presence of the minister, so that no one goes away carrying the Eucharistic species in his hand. If there is a risk of profanation, then Holy Communion should not be given in the hand to the faithful.
he allowed people to receive in the hand and then walk away while consuming it. ah well.. I suppose it is difficult to get people to actually consume it in your presence, but I was just I donno... expecting him to watch each communicant like a hawk or something... or use his special cardinal powers to make them do it right! err... yeah... so, you think I should report this to the bishop? the papal nuncio? LOL! jk hehe... anyway, this isn't a big deal.. the bigger deal was the awesomeness of his emminence
Laudate_Dominum Posted July 24, 2005 Posted July 24, 2005 Arinze is actually really cool. And I don't think it would be appropriate for clerics to act like drill sargeants. I'm glad he didn't make a fuss.
Apotheoun Posted July 24, 2005 Posted July 24, 2005 A major reform of the "reform" of the Roman Rite needs to take place.
goldenchild17 Posted July 24, 2005 Posted July 24, 2005 Definitely, baby steps though, baby steps. We don't need the whole Roman Rite going into Schism because of what they would probably consider too strong of a reform all at once.
Ash Wednesday Posted July 24, 2005 Posted July 24, 2005 I wouldn't call it "disobedience" necessarily. It would seem to me that the fault lies with the locals more than Arinze. Unexpected enforcement by a visitor is much more difficult of a route to take I would think. (I was at a mass in Sweden and a visiting Polish priest lectured the congregation for not kneeling at the consecration -- I certainly agreed with the priest but congregants were really put off because they weren't told to do so before, and they were wary of his status as a visiting priest. Not that this is fair, of course, but often clerics just temporarily visiting probably have a more difficult time being accepted as enforcers. Yes, of course it was Arinze but you'd be surprised at how many Catholics attending a mass wouldn't have a clue of who he is or at least, the liturgical matters he handles.) It would seem the responsibility lies with the parish priests and bishops to enforce this on a regular basis and "train" people to do what is proper. Perhaps on the spot enforcement wherever he happens to be visiting was not what he was talking about when he was discussing the need for "special care" to be taken.
daugher-of-Mary Posted July 24, 2005 Posted July 24, 2005 Yeah, I noticed him frowning while distributing Holy Communion. The tide is slowwwllly turning locally, mostly due to young folks who receive on the tongue. Something official needs to be done though. A woman I know told me while cleaning a local church, she found hosts (presumably consecrated) in the pews. I wonder how many people weren't even aware that he was coming and that Mass would be two hours long.lol. The Saturday evening Mass is always at 5 pm. ANDDDD Cardinal Arinze was AWESOME!!!!!!!!! : : Aloyius, do you feel pontifically blessed?

MC Just Posted July 24, 2005 Posted July 24, 2005
Getting away with murder??
im speaking about priests and bishops who let people do whatever they want at mass. Like they need to make it clear that non-catholics cannot recieve, that would be profaning the body and blood of Christ. I'm talking about those who allow liturgical abuses and wacky things to go on at mass.
Luthien Posted July 24, 2005 Posted July 24, 2005 Jesus in the pews? Goodness gracious. I agree with MC Just, I don't understand why the clergy have to tip toe all the time. If people leave because they are scolded about how they handle the Eucharist, then there wasn't much keeping them in the Church in the first place.
thessalonian Posted July 24, 2005 Posted July 24, 2005 I am quite sure he took note of it and the priest will hear about it. Communion is not the time to instruct people who should already know. That's for a homily.

I am all for doing things by the book, and I despise liturgical abuse, but I also can't stand the extreme perfectionist personality. I had a roommate who fit this category a while back, and I was tempted to use kung-fu on him more than once. hehe
Luthien Posted July 24, 2005 Posted July 24, 2005 I agree, but I also see people making the Mass more, "personal" by todays standards, which means "warm fuzzies". This is not what the martyrs died for, and its certainly not honoring Christ in the Eucharist by leaving Him in the pews either. :

How could people leave Christ in the pews when you had to go up to the communion rail and stick out your tongue. Plus, they didn't encourage every bozo in the building to take Communion so people wouldn't feel weird just not going up if they didn't want to.
