DeeDee Posted July 28, 2005 Posted July 28, 2005 Librarians rule!!!! I've worked in every department of a university library and there have been good days and bad days, but the thing that keeps me going strong is our fabulous students. They are great! We have a lot of international students, and I'm amazed at their ability to come to the USA, be away from their friends and family, most often with English as their second language and yet they are so smart and energetic. I don't know how they do it, and I have learned so much from them. :applause: I don't know if I was born to be a librarian, but I'm pretty happy being one until something else comes along. A friend of mine started the Lipstick Librarian web site. Check it out! It's hilarious! www.lipsticklibrarian.com

homeschoolmom Posted July 28, 2005 Posted July 28, 2005 I considered changing my major to Library Science... I love libraries... I also considered switching to ESL, but I didn't do that either...
theculturewarrior Posted July 29, 2005 Author Posted July 29, 2005 I might take a break and teach ESL too. In Texas there are these "correctional facilities" for adolescents called boot camps. It's like prison and basic training at the same time. I think if the desire is still there when I graduate, I'm going to get certified in ESL, Special Ed., and History and teach at a boot camp, and then do reference on the side. I've always wanted to teach ESL, and I can't think of a way to "visit the imprisoned" that appeals to me more. Those martial arts lessons might come in handy!

theculturewarrior Posted July 29, 2005 Author Posted July 29, 2005 There are a lot of homeless people who come to libraries. Especially ours. Ours is by the border, and it doesn't really get cold here. We are a five minute's walk from a historic downtown area, and close to a bus station. Some of them are unstable, and we have to kick them out, and it's scary, but on the whole, I love it. One started attending classes at the University, and another asked about G.E.D. classes. When one of them asks to use the phone, there is the instinct to revile them. They are a disease to us, or a social problem in need of an answer. But I still see myself when I look at them. The best thing about working in a library is that I will never forget who I am, or where I came from.
Ash Wednesday Posted July 29, 2005 Posted July 29, 2005 I worked in a university library for many years. Not as a librarian, but our office was in the library. I must say you librarians are a species completely all your own!
theculturewarrior Posted July 29, 2005 Author Posted July 29, 2005 If my coworker saw this thread, he would try to make into a song a la, "Born to do the hand-jive."
