[quote name='Aloysius' date='Jul 29 2005, 01:07 PM']everyone with any lick of orthodox Catholic sense understands the evils of the "modern" "post-modern" and "post-post-modern" age.  so I say we chalk the "modern" age up to history... we need to come up with a new era... any suggestions for a name?  "ancient", "classical", "medieval", "renaisance", "victorian", "modern", "post-modern", and "post-post-modern" are all already taken... so anyone got any suggestions for a name?  Something with the zing of the renaisance's name "rebirth" and the pow of the name "enlightenmnet" but still modest like "medieval"...

sugestions anyone?

The labeling of periods of history into "ages" is somewhjat artificial and arbitrary, and historians all disagree about how this should be done. However, this seems part of human nature. (As is the continuous rumor that we are on the verge of some New Era of whatever)

The most broad grouping is "ancient," "medieval," and "modern."
However, "medieval," was originally a disparaging term, much like the interchangable "dark ages" - implying the supposed period of darkness and ignorance between the glories of ancient civilization and the "Renaissance" or "Enlightenment" or whenever civilization was supposedly reborn, beginning the glorious "modern" era.
Of course, "modern" means merely the present or current times, so this designation is itself quite arbitrary. (Usually regarded as c. 1500 - ?)

"Classical" refers specifically to Greco-Roman civilization.
The Renaissance refers to an intellectual and cultural movement which began in 14th century Italy. The "Enlightenment" refers to the "rationalist" intellectual-philosophical movemtent of the 17th-18th centuries. "Victorian" refers to the reign of Queen Victoria (mid to late 19th century)

"Post modern" refers to a rather moronic academic theory popular in the late 20th century (there is no objective truth, words merely illustrate a struggle for power rather than objective meaning -etc).
And what/when in the heck is "post-post-modern"?? Desperate to declare ourselves in new ages are we?

An age must have at least passed, before we can have the historical perspective to label it. I think any labeling of this prospective new age is premature, reflecting our hopes or fears more than reality.

(Just a history major's ramblings on this topic)

[quote name='Ash Wednesday' date='Jul 29 2005, 03:25 PM']The Age of Polarization.

Either I'm just noticing it more as I get older -- or else the world really is getting more polarized.

I'd hardly say the world is more polarized than it has been in most of its history.
This "polarization" thing is more a myth of the modern media (usually in the context of some liberal journalist bemoaning things like "why has abortion become such a polarizing issue among Americans?")

Human history is a history of fighting, war, division, and and conflict. Read any history book. The idea that people in the past lived in some golden age of peace and harmony is a myth.

I'd say if anything people are overall becoming more homogenized.
While it may be true that Americans are losing common values, there have been many far more "polarized" times in history.
Even in America, only 140 years ago, we had the War Between the States. Are people that willing to fight for what they beleive in in America today?

The current "polarization" is merely reality asserting itself, dispelling the modern myth that we are all coming together into some glob of global universal mush.

for those who say it's gonna get worse yadda yadda yadda... ssssshhhhhhh

as far as i'm concerned, a few good men can create a whole new age. maybe i'm just overly optimistic. but you have to be. it doesn't matter if this age doesn't flourish until a few centuries later, we can still be forerunners. St. John the Baptist pray for us ;)

and socrates, I know the origin of the term "modern"... but in the language war I've decided to destroy the origin of that term and surrender it to be an age that has a beginning and an end, hence the age we are in right now is no longer modern. I think "modern" fits that age quite well, it was the age in which we thought everything must be new different and disassosiated from the past. let's prepare to no longer be in a modern age! :D:
