Fides_et_Ratio Posted August 13, 2005 Posted August 13, 2005 The Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary... a dogma of the Catholic faith... being celebrated liturgically on the 15th (i.e., Monday)--is not a Holy Day of Obligation to attend Mass? My parish is only offering Mass as a usual daily Mass, no evening Mass for those that work, and not even so much as an announcement about it. What gives?
heyyoimjohnny Posted August 13, 2005 Posted August 13, 2005 Since it's on a Monday, the obligation is dropped. Same as if it was on a Saturday.
heyyoimjohnny Posted August 13, 2005 Posted August 13, 2005 I hear ya... I don't usually get to go to Daily Mass, but I wanna go anyways. They're having one in the evening at my pastor's other parish... because it's the Assumption, I believe.
cappie Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 It is a Holy Day in Australia no matter when the day falls
zabbazooey Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 It's not a HDO, but my parish is holding an evening Mass anyway

In fact, we used to always have a big ice cream social after the evening Mass. It was a big hit. (and the guy that owned the ice cream shop that donated the ice cream converted a few years ago.. lol) It's only been since the previous associate pastor was sent to study Canon Law in Rome and we received our new associate pastor (whom has questionable liturgical practices) that it's stopped. I know that techinically, the pastor is the one who makes all the decisions... but it just seems a little odd (and a little coincidental), and completely crazy! We're supposed to be moving forward, not taking steps back!
Old_Joe Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 It depends on the diocese. Some dioceses (SP?) say that if the Holy Day falls on a sat. or a mon. then going to mass on sun. will fulfill that requirement. In which case some people go to Mass on the Holy day anyway.
journeyman Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 Special Mass or regular daily Mass, Mother Mary will know you're there . . . and why.
cappie Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 Canon Law: Can. 1246 §1 The Lord's Day, on which the paschal mystery is celebrated, is by apostolic tradition to be observed in the universal Church as the primary holyday of obligation. In the same way the following holydays are to be observed: the Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, the Epiphany, the Ascension of Christ, the feast of the Body and Blood of Christ, the feast of Mary the Mother of God, her Immaculate Conception, her Assumption, the feast of St Joseph, the feast of the Apostles SS Peter and Paul, and the feast of All Saints. §2 However, the Episcopal Conference may, with the prior approval of the Apostolic See, suppress certain holydays of obligation or transfer them to a Sunday.
RC_ Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 Not only is my Parish not having a Holy Day Mass, but since they're usually closed on Monday (no daily Mass), there is NO MASS AT ALL!
Laudate_Dominum Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005
Not only is my Parish not having a Holy Day Mass, but since they're usually closed on Monday (no daily Mass), there is NO MASS AT ALL!
That's just wrong!! Do you live in the countryside or something? I guess what I mean is, are there not enough priests where you live?
RC_ Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 There's nearby parishes that have regular daily Mass. Not sure if they're offering the Holy Day Mass or not. Only problem is, even if they are, I have no transportation.
traditional Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 RC, MY ADVISE IS STAY AT HOME, PRAY THE INTROIT, PREFACE AND COMMUNION PRAYERS OF THE ASSUMPTION OF OUR LADY MASS FOUND IN THE LATIN MISSAL(1963) AND THANK GOD YOU DONT HAVE THE MODERN MASS THERE FOR THIS FEAST. ALSO PRAY YOUR ROSARY. JOSEPH
Laudate_Dominum Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 If all the parishes in town were having clown masses I might do something like that, but the novus ordo is not the protestant abomination you might make it out to be. It's a perfectly valid and acceptable Liturgy. Clerics who abuse the liturgy should be called out, but it would be dumb to refuse the grace of Holy Mass because you don't like the novus ordo. You have an extreme perspective.
traditional Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 JUST BEING SAFE -ANYWAY ITS OUR LADY'S DAY SO LETS BE HONOURING HER SPECIAL PREROGATIVE-HER ASSUMPTION THE BEST WAY WE CAN DESPITE THE MODERNISM AND LIBERALSIM AND INTOLERANCE TOWARDS TRADITION AND TRADITIONALISTS IN THE CHURCH WHO ARE TRYING TO HOLD ON TO THE PURITY OF THE FAITH. AVE MARIA, JOSEPH
Laudate_Dominum Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 Yeah.. I was actually thinking of going to St. Boniface for Mass. It's a Traditional Latin Mass parish, in union with the Pope and everything. I like it because I appreciate the Tridentine Mass and because it's the most reverent parish. God bless.
the_rev Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 Our Bishop is having a big shindig up at the Marian Shrine, Mass, Rosary Procession, and Benediction! I'm going big! Yours in Christ, Eddie Lee
Theologian in Training Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 (edited) While I respect the decision that was made, I think it sends a mixed message. The Mass has been instituted for our benefit, but when we do something like this we then make Mass convenient for us, rather that to be inconvenienced, for lack of a better word, and have to go to Mass two days in a row. Again, I respect the decision, but I think it sends a mixed message on the importance of the Mass and furthermore on the Eucharist as the source and summit of our lives. Just my .02, take it for what it's worth. BTW, traditional, would you mind not typing in all caps, it makes your posts incredibly difficult to read, and gives the impression that you are constantly yelling. God Bless Edited August 14, 2005 by Theologian in Training
