theculturewarrior Posted August 19, 2005 Author Posted August 19, 2005
Congratulations on going to library school! As a university librarian this is one of the questions we used to ask people interviewing for a position. The answer was always google. However, we have tons of information databases as well. You will learn all about that! Enjoy!
I am a database jockey! : The thing is, you often find library science articles on Google Scholar that you can't find in LISA or LLIS. Google Scholar is a meta-index. The only problem is that there is no "controlled vocabulary."
littleflower+JMJ Posted August 19, 2005 Posted August 19, 2005 search engine wise i use: yahoo.com (but i dont reallyl ike it much), mostly google.com and when i really need different links i use http://www.dogpile.com http://www.ixquick.com http://www.ask.com
FlyLikeABird Posted August 19, 2005 Posted August 19, 2005 I google. Sometimes, when I'm actually close to my personal book collection, I look through those.
theculturewarrior Posted August 19, 2005 Author Posted August 19, 2005
Google Webcat for books and stuff in libraries (tricky to find, but it's there)
Are you talking about Google Print? I've never heard of this! What is the URL? :
FutureSoror Posted August 19, 2005 Posted August 19, 2005 Yahoo is my default, i have a Yahoo toolbar on my browser. Sometimes I use Google, but Webcrawler gives really good results.
morostheos Posted August 19, 2005 Posted August 19, 2005
Are you talking about Google Print? I've never heard of this! What is the URL? :
Nope, you can search OCLC's WorldCat (library listings) through Google - here's the info page: http://www.oclc.org/worldcat/open/facts/default.htm Technically what is does is uses Google or other search engines to search the website www.worldcatlibraries.org, but you can't search directly on that site - it's kinda strange. Here's a link to search WorldCat: http://www.oclc.org/worldcat/open/tryit/default.htm
sweetpea316 Posted August 19, 2005 Posted August 19, 2005
I usually just make things up.
I like your way of thinking! hahaha But yea, I used to use Yahoo all the time, but now I use Google.
theculturewarrior Posted August 19, 2005 Author Posted August 19, 2005 That's cool! We use FirstSearch for that, but it isn't open to the public.
morostheos Posted August 20, 2005 Posted August 20, 2005 Yeah, I used FirstSearch in college, but now that I don't have access to all the cool research subscriptions from college I'm learning the freebie way Another cool resource I figured out - I can get access to some subscription databases using my public library card! ProQuest, Extended Academic ASAP, and bunches of other cool things. I'm such a nerd.
