Uganda's Successful Strategy Against AIDS Based On Chastity

Jul. 23, 2002

KAMPALA, Jul 23, 02 (LSN.ca/CWNews.com) - Uganda may be on its way to wiping out AIDS by using a strategy based on chastity and fidelity, according to findings in a Harvard University study. The Harvard study credits abstinence education with "significant effectiveness in reducing AIDS in Uganda ... with the HIV infection rate dropping 50 percent between the years 1992 and 2000."

Uganda uses billboards, radio announcements, and chastity-based curricula to promote abstinence and faithfulness. The result has been a gradual, steady drop in HIV infection rates. If the report is welcomed honestly and with a real commitment to reduce suffering, then Uganda could become a model for worldwide AIDS prevention.

Harvard's study found that from the late 1980s to 2001, the number of pregnant women infected with HIV dropped from 21.2 percent to 6.2 percent. By contrast in Botswana, where condoms are officially promoted as the solution rather than part of the problem, 38 percent of pregnant women were HIV-positive in 2001.

"Much of the program's success," reports said, "is due to the nation's willingness to look beyond the sexual revolution to the past, before the adoption of corrupt Western sexual mores." The study found Ugandan adults were less promiscuous from 1989 to 2000: of women 15 and older, those reporting multiple sexual partners dropped from 18.4 percent to 2.5 percent.

Promoters of promiscuous sex and condoms tried to discredit the findings. "Ugandans really never took to condoms," said Dr. Vinand Nantulya, an infectious disease advisor to Ugandan leader Yoweri Museveni, in the New Republic magazine.

yeah right, that's really gonna happen.
If you are really Catholic you aren't for condoms, so I don't see how they can call themselves Catholics for condoms.
I'm gonna send them some ideas for a new name.
Maybe cultural catholics for condoms, or cafeteria catholics for condoms... lukewarm catholics for condoms.. heretical pseudo-catholics for condoms.. confused catholics for condoms.. crappy catholics for condoms.. catholic imposters for condoms...

is there a point to threads like these, or are they just an opportunity for those of us that are faithful to the magesterium on this issue to demonstrate our self-righteousness? while i don't agree with the stance being taken by this group, i'm pretty busy pulling planks out of my own eyes...

my reaction here reminds me why i stay away from the open mic...

i meant no offense personally to any particular poster, it's just a trend i also fall into that doesn't feel edifying at all.

ryan,

I see these threads as keepig ourselves informed by posting articles that are current. Though I admit repeating one's comments might not seem constructive, I like taking part inthem cause this is probably the ONLY place where I can actually find people who agree with me, and that includes my own family. Such threads are started inthe hopes of starting conversations and exploring subjects - though I admit this is not always sucessful.

Your point is noted (at least by me), I believe you have a good point at that. But I would hesitate to condemn the thread out of it. Heck even your own post can be seen as self-rightcheous propaganda since we are sinning while you are removing logs in your eyes (those must hurt!).

By talking with poeple with the same faith as your own, even though things get often repeated, I find I gain new hope and strenght in holding firm; outside of this place, the battle(s) are sometimes disheartening and hard to carry.

Antoher link exploring in dept the Uganda situation. Maybe a thread should be started specific to Uganda? I think this is a light of an example to why Catholic teachings are better than the tehology of liberation, even from a secular point of view!

Anyvways, God bless and take care.
