jmjtina Posted August 20, 2005 Author Posted August 20, 2005
hmmm...a millipede is a pretty cool class pet. hermit crabs are kind of boring. i live by the ocean and everyone and their brother has them. good luck on the pet hunt!!! my friend is trying to convince me to get a pet for my classroom. i told her no. i am a music teacher...there is no need for a pet.
i live by the ocean as well and no one seems to know they exsist. especially second graders. But when you hold them and let them crawl in your hand it's cool, but they are sooooooo clow in the sand. Nothing too exciting. I'm still thinking......

Laudate_Dominum Posted August 20, 2005 Posted August 20, 2005 I think a koala bear would be a cool pet. Or a kangaroo.. Or a panda bear.

It was sad, but funny. a hamster....that sounds cool. On a blog for teachers, a teacher had a hamster who had babies and the kids went to look and the hamster started eating her babies. (if she thinks her babies are in danger, they kill them.) So I just gotta make sure there is no mating going on. A kid brought in the movie "Two brothers" and I hadn't watched it yet, so I put it on, thinking, this movie is totally harmless, right? WRONG. In scene one the tigers start to get it on. I heard a word that was inappropriate and found out a student was explaining the scene to another student. Aye carumba!!! My first year was soooooooooo exciting.
Noel's angel Posted August 20, 2005 Posted August 20, 2005 yeah, koala bears are kinda angry little creatures though-not much good as a pet. A panda would be cool though

(or else there will just be other things that stop and make you go "hmmmmmm.") I love working with kids. They are so cute. And some of the things they say!!!! I only get to see them for an hour and a half a week.....but boy are they precious!!!!! ~Jen

The second year, I'm actually doing ALOT more and enjoying it more. Not that I didn't enjoy it last year, but this year is ALOT easier than last year. That first year makes you or breaks you. Especially the politics of education. But a smile, a hug, a love note(I have a TON of love notes from my students last year!!) can totally put sunshine back in my day!!!!! I love the little ones. But I love teaching children and they say the CRAZIEST things. A teacher once said, "When a parent comes up to me angry, asking me why I did this and this to thier child, I just tell them, You should only believe half of what your child tells you about what happens at school and I'll only believe a fourth of what your child tells me what happens at home." Alot of the times, it's toooooooooooo much information. Kids pick up everything. I was VERY blessed to have such an awesome group of collegues.
philothea Posted August 20, 2005 Posted August 20, 2005 We had lots of weird classroom pets in 7th grade, but they weren't exactly "fun". The snapping turtle was kind cool, though... Honestly, it sounds icky, but rats are fabulous pets. They don't bite like hamsters, they're smart, and they're very friendly. Only they don't live terribly long, a couple years, tops. So get a young rat if you adopt one for the class. Could be a bummer otherwise.

God's Errand Girl Posted August 20, 2005 Posted August 20, 2005 (edited) My husband and I have two axolotls (a.k.a. water salamanders) and they are so much fun to watch. They always look like they're smiling! Their gills are really cool too because they're external. By the way, axolotls are also really easy to take care of. God's Errand Girl Posted August 20, 2005 Posted August 20, 2005 (edited) Yeah, Indiana University has a whole portion of their science department that is dedicated to studying axolotls. Why? Because they can regenerate pretty much anything that is cut off their bodies (except the head of course). If you're really interested, you could contact I.U. I know that we got our axolotls from the university that my husband attends. They're awesome, aren't they?
