stargirl3:16 Posted August 22, 2005 Posted August 22, 2005 Ok, so I have a $25 gift card for Barnes and Noble. I want to get some books, and so far I want Dark Night of the Soul (only $2.50!) but I don't know what else to get. Any suggestions?
Sojourner Posted August 22, 2005 Posted August 22, 2005 I'm going to buy "Eldest" tomorrow. I read "Eragon" and really liked it.
stargirl3:16 Posted August 22, 2005 Author Posted August 22, 2005 I'm going for any religious books, nonfiction if I can help it.
dUSt Posted August 22, 2005 Posted August 22, 2005 Get "Triumph: The Power and The Glory of the Catholic Church".
thessalonian Posted August 22, 2005 Posted August 22, 2005 Do you have Augustine's Confessions? They should.
Aloysius Posted August 22, 2005 Posted August 22, 2005 give me the money, I'd know what to do with it it's a little more than $25, but you should get "How the Catholic Church built Western Civilization" I liked that better than Triumph.
Fides_et_Ratio Posted August 22, 2005 Posted August 22, 2005 oh boy... $25... I'd be sooo happy! lol. my recommendations: (well over $25, but you can pick and choose) "Salt of the Earth" by Joseph Ratzinger/Peter Seewald "Life of Christ" by Fulton Sheen "The Everlasting Man" by GK Chesterton "God is Near Us"/"Called to Communion"/"Feast of Faith"/"Spirit of the Liturgy"/ anything else by Joseph Ratzinger/Pope Benedict XVI "Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma" Ludwig Ott "Love and Responsibility" by Karol Wojtyla (/Pope JPII) "The Imitation of Christ" by Thomas A Kempis ... I think I'll stop there.
Sojourner Posted August 22, 2005 Posted August 22, 2005
Get "Triumph: The Power and The Glory of the Catholic Church".
That's a good book. I got it and read it over Christmas last year. Fascinating.
Sojourner Posted August 22, 2005 Posted August 22, 2005
cookbooks
That's a good idea too ... "Joy of Cooking" is one of the best cookbooks you can buy. Great recipes, very detailed. Love it.
FlyLikeABird Posted August 22, 2005 Posted August 22, 2005 Oh my where would I start?!?! Only 25 dollars? That's just sad, I usually go and spend at least twice that much when I get into a book store. Last pleasure trip was about 75 dollars. I bought my textbooks today, well some of them. rang in around 150. I would want religious books, music books or fantasy and sci fi.

Aloysius Posted August 22, 2005 Posted August 22, 2005 my favorite part was when we almost had a monastic industrial revolution, but then Henry VIII squelched it! oops... uh... that was a spoiler.

I love that book, one of my sisters in law gave it to me the first Christmas I spent with Matt's family. Another good one is The Complete Step By Step Cooking Class Cookbook---but its no longer in print so you have to try and find a copy used, try Ebay (it was originally sold for almost 60 bucks, you can usually find it on Ebay for under 10). I've found a couple copies there (my mom and sisters want copies, too, so far we 3 oldest and married girls have our own copies). Edited August 22, 2005 by IcePrincessKRS
Christie_M Posted August 22, 2005 Posted August 22, 2005 Get a book about a saint if they have one. I'm reading "The Story of a Soul" it's about St. Therese of Lesuix. but I don't go to a store, I go to the library.
FlyLikeABird Posted August 22, 2005 Posted August 22, 2005 Libraries are useful are they not? I like going to the library, I've managed to borrow a number of movies too. But for keeping books, the best way is to get gifts from people. I have a friend who is passing on a number to me once I'm moved.
