Aloysius Posted August 24, 2005 Posted August 24, 2005 So... seeing as it is clear from the Second Vatican Council that the Church prefers Gregorian chant... what do you prefer? I'd personally rather have the only instrument at Mass be the one made by God, the human voice. chant rules. also from Vatican II we see the Church prefers the organ out of any man-made instruments being used.. but then there's all the other instruments and I suppose if you're eastern then your chant isn't GREGORIAN... :
inDEED Posted August 24, 2005 Posted August 24, 2005 It depends... I love an awesome Lifeteen mass with electric guitars, drums, piano, percussion instruments, loud music, etc. I love a traditional mass with a beautiful organ and choir.
inDEED Posted August 24, 2005 Posted August 24, 2005 hahaha... 3 "traditional" choices and 1 "other instruments"...
Philippe Posted August 24, 2005 Posted August 24, 2005 i like guitars and piano and drums and all that fun stuff!
White Knight Posted August 24, 2005 Posted August 24, 2005 Ive only been to two services of Mass in my entire life, and I really liked it, I liked both services. and the music there was good.
DeeDee Posted August 24, 2005 Posted August 24, 2005 I've seen and heard just about everything in a masses I've attended: guitar and singer guitar and piano organ and choir choir only Gospel mass no music priest singing the mass I don't have any particular favorite, although the Gospel mass was probably the most uplifting.
Piccoli Fiori JMJ Posted August 24, 2005 Posted August 24, 2005 How come "Nuns with Organ" is not a choice?
Brother Adam Posted August 24, 2005 Posted August 24, 2005 chant and organ. I'd prefer to save the guitar for a wednesday evening layperson prayer group.
Myles Domini Posted August 24, 2005 Posted August 24, 2005
Turntables
LOL! The raw human voice preferably Gregorian chant or 16/17th century polyphony. Bring on Palestrina! Instruments are ok but they're practically little more than an accompaniment unless you're a genius like Haydn and sometimes the great composers risk turning the Mass into a concert rather than Heaven on earth. Give me a man singing from his spirit over an organ anyday...
franciscanheart Posted August 24, 2005 Posted August 24, 2005 it depends. i like the other instruments to back something up - not solo. i like guitars backing up the piano or the organ by itself. i also like on easter when we have the festival brass with us. thats awesome. i also like gregorian chant and the more classical choirs.
zwergel88 Posted August 24, 2005 Posted August 24, 2005 I've never been to a Mass that had gregorian chant, but that is what I would like if I had the chance
SarahB Posted August 24, 2005 Posted August 24, 2005 I grew up Eastern Catholic and would probably prefer that had I ever run into anyone who could sing it properly. But I do love Gregorian Chant.
Fides_et_Ratio Posted August 24, 2005 Posted August 24, 2005 When I visited a Monastery in Austria and heard, for the first time, live Gregorian chant by the monks there... I was hooked. There is no turning back.
Myles Domini Posted August 24, 2005 Posted August 24, 2005
I grew up Eastern Catholic and would probably prefer that had I ever run into anyone who could sing it properly. But I do love Gregorian Chant.
Did you see the Vigil last Saturday at WYD? What did you think of the Akathist?
Extra ecclesiam nulla salus Posted August 25, 2005 Posted August 25, 2005 gregorian chant is a lot better than on eagels wings
Fidei Defensor Posted August 25, 2005 Posted August 25, 2005
gregorian chant is a lot better than on eagels wings
Obviously. But your continuation of stereotyping all NO masses is upsetting.
