It depends...

I love an awesome Lifeteen mass with electric guitars, drums, piano, percussion instruments, loud music, etc.

I love a traditional mass with a beautiful organ and choir.

But to make it seem like you either have Chant or "creatured center" hymns is unfair. You are stereotyping the NO masses by implying that those who dont use chant, use hymns like "On Eagles Wings."

Not everyone is misguided like some priests have been. Most of the faithful follow the rules.

is it not agianst the rules to use On eagles wings?

i think its perfectly allowed

wether that is a good or bad thing remains to be seen.

that's because I was using Vatican II as my template... it refers to these specific forms of music, and then puts in a little "others are allowed but not preferred" thing. ;)

okay john kerry..
Phatmass is strongly opposed to advocating the use of hip-hop in the liturgy, as we do not feel it properly creates an atmosphere of reverence condusive to prayer
so... you first voted against turntables before you voted against them? :D:

I prefer my Teen Life band at my parish. with Guitars, Drums, Keyboards, rock n' roll praise like Trading My Srorrows, Our God Is An Awesome God, Days of Elijah, My Glorious etc...

Also its amazing when the whole parish clap a long.

i like the song they always play before communion at my church. great song.......i should burn it on a cd some day and listen to it in my car.

Before my Church canned the choir director (who wasn't even a Catholic :maddest: ), we had horrible music and songs where we were "speaking as the Lord." Made me want to vomit!

Now we have better hymns but still non-trad instruments, except in the summer, when there's no choir, just the congregation singing. Somehow I prefer the latter.

I'd love to get Gregorian chants here though.

The raw human voice preferably Gregorian chant or 16/17th century polyphony. Bring on Palestrina! Instruments are ok but they're practically little more than an accompaniment unless you're a genius like Haydn and sometimes the great composers risk turning the Mass into a concert rather than Heaven on earth. Give me a man singing from his spirit over an organ anyday...

I like Palestrina...and Lassus...and many more. :D:

I don't think he did in this thread. :)

I agree, though, with Sam. Gregorian chant is better (Liturgically) for numerous reasons.

1) It's in line with the teaching of the Catholic Church on what is to be used during the Roman Liturgy, as restated in Vatican II. :)

Sacred Polyphony, Gregorian Chant, Hymns and someties Masses with no music at all.

Guitars, drum sets, and hokey "music ministers" need not be present.

Organs (eletric or not) are amazing, provided they are played with enthusiam (sp) and vigor.

You know, I think I understand now why a lot of people on here hate guitars so much. I was messing around one day and I came across a number of groups who said that their music was played at Mass but when I listened to their music, I nearly fell off my chair. They sang higher than Hanson in the early days and it seemed like they were trying to fit in as many syllables in a bar as they could, without breathing. The lyrics left a lot to be desired and it sounded like they were having a barndance rather than playing music for Mass. On the otherhand, please don't judge everyone simply on the basis of the guitarists you have heard-in Ireland we have good choirs which use guitars as well as flutes and violins and we stick to more traditional hymns. Believe me, if the only guitarists I had ever heard were those people I heard the other day, I would hate guitarists too, but I don't because I have heard many guitarists over here who play in an appropriate manner, sticking more traditional hymns instead of much of this modern fooey.
