I have a tv for watching DVDs that I rent , and my video collection, since I am an avid film collector. I don't have cable and rarely watch broadcast tv.

Pitch it.

TV is almost completely worthless.

only thing is without internet at home, its the only way to keep up on news in emergancy situations.

You could buy a weather radio for weather emergencies.

Or, just store your TV in your garage or attic or a closet or something. If it's out-of-sight and hard to get to, you'll be less likely to watch it. But, if you need it in an emergency situation, you can still access it.

Or make friends with a neighbor who has a TV, so that in an emergency situation you can just go over to their house for updates.

Even though television isn't the safest thing for children to flip on these days, it does have a lot of neat programs. Just get a fiddler and block out programs by their TV ratings or the whole channels themselves.

I don't watch much TV to be honest, because usually I need to be doing something than just sitting there; so I usually have the TV on in the background while I'm working on something. But there are some programs I like to watch.

Another thing I would like to add: I don't view TV as an instrument of evil, hiding away a television set isn't going to make obscene programs just disappear. I don't have a problem with those who don't watch TV, however; you should do whatever works for you and your family. But you must take note, you may not be watching it, but millions of others will be.

I feel that I'm called to the film industry (if it be cinema or television), I can't afford to run away from it. I'm keeping my TV.

BLAH, I can't type today! *Head explodes a million times over*

I really like the idea of not owning a TV, I bet I'd get loads more work done, but I'm a 'newsaholic'....

I was at the house of a friend who doesn't own a TV when the news broke that Pope John Paul II had died - it was a one line statement on the radio and that was it.....I was really glad I had news 24 on cable when I got home!

the thing with TV is that it can be really educational. some people are visual learners and don't want to read about things in books (my husband), but love to learn and so documentary type programming (animal planet, science shows, history channel, etc) are GREAT tools. granted we don't have cable, but PBS has stuff like that on it. bro adam, it doesn't sound like you guys are addicted and the TV is distracting you if you turn it on once a week. just keep it that way and it's fine.
that being said, man i miss the weather channel, animal planet and star trek reruns on spike.... oh and ewtn... (and i have dialup, so i dont want to hear abuot that streaming live nonsense!)

There are some educational things on TV, but you have to get through all the junk first in order to find the good stuff. I would rather read a book or play games with my family than watch TV. :book: However, living out in the middle of nowhere in Texas, :texas: , we need someway to get our news otherwise we wouldn't know about this Hurricane! The point is that we have gotten so used to there being something available all the time whenever we want it, that I don't think anything is going to change.

I personally say Keep a tv for like DVD;s and VHS and cancel like Satelite and Cable, (you can get bunney ears for local channels if you want) so if there's a good dvd you can still watch it, or when you have kids they can see lion king and dumbo, etc.

i said yes, b/c u can get stuff on DVD (not even just movies, but seasons of ur fav shows) and as for EWTN, my fav channel, u can watch that on the Internet. I think there is a lot of carp on TV now and i don't watch too much (By God's grace, i don't watch soap operas anymore! lol) even though my friends and sister think i'm absolutely nuts :lol_roll:

We have the TV on alot, actually, and have several shows we enjoy. The thing is we only seriously watch like 2 of those shows regularly (every week). I keep it on for background noise while I work on other projects. I like the noise. I grew up in a house with 14 people.

I do that, too. Sometimes I have the radio on in one room and the TV on in the other...

You cough on the Radio?

Yeah, when its really dusty. Sometimes I sneeze, too.

the radio would be better if 1 company didnt own most of everything

Note: my possessions' livelihoods depend entirely on the Providence of the Divine...quite literally.

I know that for my apartment, the best compromise is having a TV, but no cable. Right now I'm a refugee, so I'll find out if I even have a TV in a couple days.

PS. If the hurricane killed my monitor, I'm gonna consolidate to a monitor/tv combo.

I tend toward this, too. Our primary tv time is in the early morning (when the kids are waking up and too grumpy to do school ie 6:30- 7:30) when we have PBS on. And in the evenings when I'm winding down (I have to wind down-- even if I come home from a meeting at 10:00 or later, I have to watch some tv to let my brain relax... reading doesn't do it. I can read for a while, but then have to relax with some tv. All told, my kids watch about an hour a day and I watch an hour or two... HSdad would probably get rid of it...

There's a TV in each main room at our house. A TV in the living room, one in my brother's room, one in my room, and in my Dad's office. XD *points to avatar*

It's only worth it if you have awesome cable or satellite. If you don't plan on having either, don't get a TV.
