HOUSTON, Texas (AP) -- Former Presidents Bush and Clinton got smiles, hugs and requests for autographs when they met with refugees from Hurricane Katrina -- but it was Bush's wife who got attention for some of her comments.

Barbara Bush, who accompanied the former presidents on a tour of the Astrodome complex Monday, said the relocation to Houston is "working very well" for some of the poor people forced out of New Orleans.

"What I'm hearing, which is sort of scary, is they all want to stay in Texas. Everyone is so overwhelmed by the hospitality," she said during a radio interview with the American Public Media program "Marketplace." "And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this is working very well for them."

Her comments came as the two former presidents visited with hundreds of the 23,600 hurricane refugees and announced the creation of the Bush-Clinton Katrina Fund.
Now if only we all were as lucky as the Louisianians.

I'm not quite sure how to take this...mostly because I don't understand what her point was.

I think she was trying to say that everyone in Louisiana that was affected was poor to start with, so now the governments going to bail them out and they're somehow benefitting from this.

Yeah, that and it's scary to have all these people nearby in Texas

Yeah, God forbid they should need some place to stay and - yknow - not die.

How stupid can one woman be?! That sentence sounds so....STUPID STUPID STUPID!

Ya know, sometimes I worry about the stupidity of people. :ohno:

I think she's just praising the hospitality and efforts of the people in Houston to help the refugees.

Maybe you don't like the way it was worded, but really, this is just making a big deal out of nothing.

Yeah, I tend to get a little angry when we're talking about anyone with Bush for a last name. Sorry if I over reacted.

How old is she? Has she gone senile?

Yeah, and the "scary" part being that such a huge number of people possibly moving to the city/state long term all at once is a little overwhelming. These people will need jobs and homes, they can't stay in the astrodome forever. So yeah, I totally understand why it would be a scary concept. Sometimes older people say kind of daffy things. Cut her some slack. (My great grandmother told her neighbors--who happen to be close friends with my sister--that I was anorexic. Which was/is totally NOT true, but I still love Granny, despite the wacko things she comes up with. ;) )

I don't think Mrs. Bush was actually saying that it was a great thing that Katrina blew in... I think she meant to say that it will be a new start (possibly a better economic situation) for some people who had been trapped in poverty. Certainly not the entire area effected was impoverished, but certainly many were.

And, frankly, this will be very taxing for the people of Houston and other areas taking in evacuees. All of those children need to be placed in schools-- imediately! I'm sure they aren't prepared for that. And who's going to pay for it? Local taxpayers. Yet I haven't heard anyone complaining about it. I think the cities who have opened their doors have (probably) been nothing but compassionate.

Guys, give it a rest. I live in Houston and the people around here are doing all they can to help. Heaven forbid that a channel such as CNN should post something to support their agenda... and... who knows.. actually misrepresent a level-headed First Lady.

There is no way you can criticize what the Texans are doing for these poor people. Sure, many of them were on welfare when they came here. That doesn't mean that we're going to bash them for not evacuating while they had the time.

Homeschoolmom said it well.

uh...maybe what she meant was, people at the Astrodome are being taken care of, and since they didn't have the resources to do so on their own it's a good thing. Facts is facts, and the fact is they were underprivileged, which is a nice way of saying poor as dirt. that's not insensitive, it's realistic.

substitute Hillary Clinton for Barbara Bush in the article. suspend your disbelief. Does that raise the same ire? gimme a break.

He's right. We tend to be very selective of what or who we choose to be outraged about.

With that being said, I still like Barbara Bush in some ways. Though she's not one to think before opening her mouth, she's never been one to sugar coat her mind or try to impress people. I have more ire and suspicion for dishonest butt kissers.

Hardly anybody in the political spectrum is really taking personal (or party-wide) responsibility. That is what makes me so angry. It's all about how "THEY" have screwed this whole country up. I think one of the reasons why this was bungled wasn't because of one party's weakness. It's all about politics, spinning, and power struggle and saving each other's butts rather than the ones by the Gulf.

If you eliminate the word "anyway" from her quote, it makes a difference. I wish she had.

I'd just like to say that I'm not pointing any finger at anybody other than Barbara. I don't really care too much about political agendas at play, I just thought it was ludicrous. Barbara Bush's offhanded remarks about flood victims aren't exactly going to radically alter the political landscape.

Nope, it won't -- what Babs says doesn't really mean much. I was just offering my two clams about the whole thing in general.

Yeah. The really sad part of this is that she seemed so darned nice on the Simpsons.

I realize its a bit of a Pollyanna-ish sentiment, but I find it endearing to see Bush Sr. and Clinton being friends and working together for a common cause. I guess it's because I remember 92 when they weren't so friendly -- Bush said his dog Millie knew more about foreign policy than those "bozos" (Clinton and Gore), and Clinton said in that case Millie taught Bush how to "roll over and play dead" on the economy.
