crusader1234 Posted September 8, 2005 Author Posted September 8, 2005 They should have a bake sale to pay for the war.
Aloysius Posted September 8, 2005 Posted September 8, 2005 maybe for some people it will work out well. God forbid a tragedy be used as an oppurtunity for good, or that a nice old lady who used to be first lady should hope for such a thing. I liked her comment, shows a sense of hope in the face of unspeakable tradgedy. I hope for a lot of the impoverished people of New Orleans this becomes a new beginning.

I really don't see how she expressed a sentiment of hope in the slightest. I mean, I'm all for looking for the silver lining, but hope? Really? She said that things were working out 'very well' for the victims, as if this was a good thing. Not even the White House tried to put the 'hope' spin on her comments, simply dismissing her comments as her personal opinion. I mean, if she'd said "I hope this can be a new beginning for the victims", that would be different. Instead, she just made it seem like they were better off this way. I'd really like her to say that to the faces of the people who are grieving the loss of family members and see exactly how 'very well' they are doing. ETA: In regards to the cynicism, it wasn't meant to come off that way - I was just remembering that film and enjoying the Pollyanna sentiment. That or maybe I'm just impertinent.

crusader1234 Posted September 8, 2005 Author Posted September 8, 2005 Oh, I got that it wasn't criticism, I just wanted to clarify. I do make cynical jokes quite often, but that wasn't meant to be one... not directly anyways haha.
Aloysius Posted September 8, 2005 Posted September 8, 2005 maybe we're just reading the statements differently... I see absolutely nothing wrong with them. it's very likely that for many people this will be a better situation, and if so then great. to get all in a huff over it is silly.
toledo_jesus Posted September 8, 2005 Posted September 8, 2005 how many offhanded remarks have you made about this event? or any event? How many times a day do you use the word, "anyway"? Do you have a microphone in your face? Are you quoted? if you had been, would you have sounded any better? She's just a person. She's old too. Leave her alone. And, of course it's a better situation for them. The alternative is New Orleans...not a nice place to be right now. duh.
