Aloysius Posted September 9, 2005 Posted September 9, 2005 I'm not so sure. the laws were broken by the individual priests. the bishop cannot be held accountable for the way he disciplined that priest by the state even if he disciplined the priest wrongly. that is really what is happening, the Church is being sued because it did not discipline its priests the way the state says it should have.
Jaime Posted September 9, 2005 Posted September 9, 2005 The diocese will be sued if they have in their responsibility someone who has violated the law. Why would they not be responsible? And would you like to retract your statement
These people who attack Christ's Church in such a way will answer for their crimes to the Final Judge who has authority over both the Church and the infant country called the "united states of america."
Its uncalled for.
Aloysius Posted September 9, 2005 Posted September 9, 2005 I was referring to this lawyer and others like him as an attacker of Christ's Church and I will not recant it. also, I am saying that the Church is not responsible to the secular authority. The bishops are responsible to Rome for the way they govern their diocese and it is Rome who should discipline them for the way they governed their diocese.
RC_ Posted September 11, 2005 Posted September 11, 2005 How is money going to make it any better? IT ISN'T The Church should pay for counseling, but no amount of money is going to make the effects of the abuse any better. The only thing these outragous and idiotic lawsuits accomplish is to reduce the amount of good the Church is able to do. They are vindictive "justice".
Philippe Posted September 11, 2005 Posted September 11, 2005
Its called responsibility Al. Its everywhere in society. If a teacher violates the trust, the teacher and the school district get sued. Why? Because the school system put the teacher there. No difference with the Church. We all bear responsibility simply by being Catholic.
i agree

Pio Nono Posted September 11, 2005 Posted September 11, 2005 JMJ 9/11 - Twenty-fourth Sunday This just deepens my hatred for Minnesota.
Fides_et_Ratio Posted September 11, 2005 Posted September 11, 2005 I'm with RC. I don't get why getting any amount of money from the diocese/Church is going to make it better. It's not. And if they agree that the money isn't going to make it better... why are they taking it? Are they going to do good with it? Donate it to the victims of Hurricaine Katrina, the Tsunami victims, any other charity? In all honesty, I highly doubt it. They're going to buy a new car... a new house, or whatever, and rather than forgiving and moving on with their lives by the grace of God, they will throw themselves into materialism and blame all their faults on a tragic past event rather than take responsibility for the way in which they've directed their future. We are not entirely responsible for everything that happens to us, but we are responsible for the way in which we react. But by all means, I pray they'll prove me wrong...
