I'm just guessing that's what he was getting at. But if you look at the text of the novus ordo along side the text of the Tridentine, the similarities are obvious enough. Compare the same Liturgies with the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, the Liturgy of St. Mark, the Liturgy of St. Basil, or whatever, and you'll appreciate how similar the novus ordo and Tridentine are.

apparenlty thats not what one of Father Levis personalities thinks..............

he simply stated that it has few if any roots in the tridentine mass. this is accurate, it cannot be said to have roots in that mass if it did not grow out of that mass. it was put together by a committee; artificially fabricated with pieces of the old mass and some other things they wanted to add.

than what do they have in common?
A bit of history:

When the Missal for the Tridentine Mass was created in 1570 after the Council of Trent,

Error # 1:
The council of Trent did not create was is commonly referred to as the "Tridentine Mass". There was a slight revision of a missal that had been in existence, in its esence (ritually speaking) for no less than 1000 years.
After the missal for the Pauline Mass, which is now universally celebrated, was created (in 1970), the Tridentine Mass was prohibited, though Pope John Paul II later gave permission to some priests to celebrate Mass according to the Tridentine Missal.

Error #2.

Truth:
The Tridentine Mass was never prohibited. The only restrictions on it are those that lie within the authority of any bishop to restrict the liturgy within his diocese as provided by the CCL, but are not reserved specifcally to the Tridentine Mass (as such).

Anyways, what I really wanted to share was this quote from Pope Benedict's memoirs, Milestones, which might help clarify Fr. Levis' comment.

Error #3:
Thinking that Cardinal Ratzinger's statements support your position.

How do they not support her?

Huh? Support who?

Colleen. You said Cardinal Ratzinger doesn't support her position, how is that?

Posted

Because Cardinal Ratzinger is drawing the distintion between what Vat. II called for and what the Concilium provided. In other words, he does not support the notion that the Trid. Mass was invented by Pope Pius V, nor does he support the claim that the Novus Ordo was an organic development from the Trid. Mass.

I think that's what Colleen was saying. :)

I may actually be misreading her, but it was the "created" part earlier on. I think she was talking about how the actually essense of the Mass isn't made so much...but I dunno. :idontknow:

I may be mis-reading her as well, in which case I retract my statement and apologize for making an ass of myself.

To answer your question, Sam, the P rite is similar to the T rite in that they are both mass rites and they both follow the basic structure of the Mass. Not only do they both follow the basic structure of the Mass (lit. of the word, lit of the Eucharist -- or mass of catechumens and mass of the faithful, and the fundamentals in each part), but they have more similarities because the T rite was one of the things the committee used as a basis or reference point in coming up with the new liturgy.
