Our new little friend

So my housemate, J, was complaining to me the other day about a noise she heard on the roof while she was in the second-floor bathroom. It sounded like a rather large animal scrabbling about in our attic or on the roof. I told her it was probably a squirrel, but she has instead been arguing that it's a large rat with a sword (ala "The Secret of NIMH").

However, this morning when she went in to take a shower, she saw the culprit peering in the window -- it's a raccoon! Apparently swordless. Hopefully he won't find his way into our attic.

Thank God it wasn't an ROUS!! You get an infestation of those and look out!!

Perhaps it's the demon in the exorcist. You know, the one with the scary white face, that crawls around in the attic, and by night eats little children?

Good thing there are no little children living in that house...

I don't think J's seen "Princess Bride," or I'm sure that would have been her first thought.

She's named our little buddy Henry.

My mom discovered a pile of croutons in the back of her dish towel drawer. She had hoped that my kids had put them there, but alas, she discovered she has a mouse friend... How he got them there, remains a mystery.

J and I have been hearing horror stories from our neighbors about mice. Pretty much every one of our neighbors has had one at one time or another.

The problem with us is that both J and I are going to have the exact same response to any mouse in our house, which largely involves jumping on the nearest piece of furniture and screaming really, really loud. One of us is going to have to overcome the fear enough to set a trap.

Actually I've heard that furniture jumping is the best way to kill mice.

Posted

Maybe we could work on coordinating our screams into some sort of deadly harmonic frequency. Deadly for the mouse and not for us, hopefully.

I used to have a pet mouse...

but i'd have no problem setting traps...

Rodents of any size really creep me out. I can deal with bugs, but rodents are another story.

By the way....

If it is on your roof then it is in your attic.

What ... you mean that it's definitely gotten into the attic if it's on the roof? Couldn't it have just dropped onto the roof from a tree or something?

Actually if its on the roof, then its definitely been in her bed.

That's a statistical fact.

How do you go through life without seeing the Princess Bride?

Check your attic for new furniture, he might be planning on a condo up there

I'm the same way (except I will never ever set a trap myself!)

If its a rat you call a cat.
If its a coon, you are doomed. :D:

I'll be sure to pass that along to her. Although, she thinks it's cute and wants to keep it. I'm the one who's freaked out about rabies and hygienic problems.

And I don't know how she hasn't seen the Princess Bride. I can quote the entire movie verbatim from start to finish.

Coons are cute and cuddly when they are small, but can get mean and nasty as they get older. They get very demanding and territorial as well.
Not a great long-term roomie situation. You need to demand a generous security deposit and a hefty rent.
