Well, actually yesterday, I suppose, I can legally drink in at least most of the US. Which might have had some significance if I liked drinking and ever went to the US. You know, if I liked drinking, I could have celebrated my 18th birthday by getting a beer, my 19th by going to Ottawa and getting a beer, and this one by going to the States and getting a beer. But I don't like drinking, which saves a lot of time and money.

you people need critical reading lessons... well... maybe the sentence was a bit convoluted

but anyway, she basically said she just turned 21 but doesn't live in the United States. where she lives it is 18. she doesn't drink anyway (sigh... ignoring God's precious gift of alchohol... lol... I'm disapointed)

a little convoluted? did you read it? she made it sound like she just turned 20. :wine: and you really can drink at any age it is just against the law :smokey:

One of my favorite songs is called "Kein Alkohol (Ist auch Keiner Lösung!) [No alcohol is also no solution] and for the longest time I thought the parenthetical was "Kein Erlösung", which means "No Redemption". Both make sense, considering the lyrics:

Without any drugs, it doesn't work
It will always be so
And Jesus saw it precisely so
Therefore he made wine from water

From the Vatican to the Taliban
One sees that it stands to truth
That the absolute teetotalers
Make the worst people.

Yeah, the English doesn't rhyme so well. Just learn German and you'll love it.

if it's legal to drink where she is at age 18, why would one travel out of town to drink at 19?

I"m not a big drinker OR a big reader. hahahaha! :)

Yay, Aloysius knows how to make sense of sentences. Unless I'm really over-tired, my sentences always make sense. They might not be easily understandable, though.

"if it's legal to drink where she is at age 18, why would one travel out of town to drink at 19?"
Well, it's only 2 1/2 hours to Ottawa, and I have family there, and I was there the day before my birthday anyway. But I guess the idea would be to celebrate being able to drink in different places as you became able to drink there.

Aloysius, I'm not against drinking or anything; I just don't enjoy it and hence don't do it.

Yeah, my original post was a way of anouncing my birthday to all those with deductive skills. And if you didn't get it, just blame it on the late hour. :)

Personally, I've always liked the heavy metal song "Die Eier Von Satan" (The balls of Satan)

Die Eier von Satan

Eine halbe Tasse Staubzucker
Ein Viertel Teelöffel Salz
Eine Messerspitze türkisches Haschisch
Ein halbes Pfund Butter
Ein Teelöffel Vanillenzucker
Ein halbes Pfund Mehl
Einhundertfünfzig Gramm gemahlene Nüsse
Ein wenig extra Staubzucker
... und keine Eier

In eine Schüssel geben
Butter einrühren
Gemahlene Nüsse zugeben und
Den Teig verkneten

Augenballgroße Stücke vom Teig formen
Im Staubzucker wälzen und
Sagt die Zauberwörter
Simsalbimbamba Saladu Saladim

Auf ein gefettetes Backblech legen und
Bei zweihundert Grad für fünfzehn Minuten backen und
KEINE EIER

Bei zweihundert Grad für fünfzehn Minuten backen und
Keine Eier ..

Oh, and I want to emphasize that I am not a teetotaler. I have drunk alcoholic beverages, I have nothing against drinking, and I enjoyed Fr. Jim's post on his blog:

"Teetotalitarianism"
-- That's the name suggested in the comments at Disputations for this unnamed vice mentioned by St Thomas Aquinas in the Summa theologiae:

Objection 1. It would seem that drunkenness is not a sin. For every sin has a corresponding contrary sin, thus timidity is opposed to daring, and presumption to pusillanimity. But no sin is opposed to drunkenness. Therefore drunkenness is not a sin.

Reply to Objection 1. As the Philosopher says (Ethic. iii, 11), insensibility which is opposed to temperance "is not very common," so that like its species which are opposed to the species of intemperance it has no name. Hence the vice opposed to drunkenness is unnamed; and yet if a man were knowingly to abstain from wine to the extent of molesting nature grievously, he would not be free from sin.

(For the uninitiated, Aquinas structures his Summa by posing a question, listing as many objections as he can think of to the correct position, and then, after citing an illustrative authority, replying in detail to each of the objections.)

Thanks... your name is Tina, right?

And cheers, with my glass of... how about a combination of different juices mixed with 7up? Orange juice is of course necessary, though just plain apple juice with 7up is good too (as are many other things).

Oh, yeah. In Germany I had some sort of darker (and better) apple juice that was carbonated, so it looked like beer. It was really good. It also had the bonus of being carbonated, since, with the way I was sick, water made my throat feel even drier.

It's really good just about any time. Of course, I am going by my biased memory...

you can drink at any age as long as your parents are with you and says ok.

Posted

A lot of the countries that have low drinking ages, also have cultural expectations and laws that prohibit public drunkenness. Basically, not only are you expected to behave responsibly, but it's also enforced.

Posted

Actually, it's illegal in the US for parents to give their children alcohol. It's just that such a law is so asinine that it's never enforced. However, there's been increased interest in parties wherein alcohol is served while parents are present. Such parents have been getting into big trouble, even if only their own children are drinking.
