Thy Geekdom Come Posted October 9, 2005 Posted October 9, 2005 It drops my conversations, it logs me into the network but just sits there thinking for over an hour, and when I can't seem to get anywhere and decide to complain, I hear, "oh, one of the servers is down...we're working on it." Since when did "one of the servers is down" become an excuse? Shouldn't there be backups? Should students who need the internet for school work, not to mention keeping up with family and friends, be left offline the weekend before midterms? When we address the IT office and they tell us that they plan to have a better network next year, why don't we ask, "why will it take so long?" I couldn't log on in my dorm today, so I took my computer to the hook-ups in the library and tried there...it still wouldn't go. The library boasts super fast internet connections...well yeah, when the IT department keeps up on their job and makes sure the server can handle the anticipated traffic! [/rant]

Andrea348 Posted October 9, 2005 Posted October 9, 2005 i think there are few colleges without network issues....and the worst part like is many courses now have online components or research that needs to be done.... my colleges network sucked....last semester it was down completely for three days...

Then not only can you not use the amazingly slow internet connection, you can't use the computer...or telephone, or stereo, or t.v., or microwave, or anything.

Or we can, as I found out, go type the mail, save it as a draft, and then mail it out from the draft folder. Silly, I know. But it is a problem with the Microsoft stuff. It is evil. The IT here is decent, but when it goes down, it is bad. If a server went down the whole campus would probly explode. I mean, explode as in a. To drive forth (air); to emit. And this is Iowa, what would stop all that air that is been driven forth from rotating and being scary?

scardella Posted October 10, 2005 Posted October 10, 2005 Yeah, the IT's iron grip caused me headaches when I was there. My biggest gripe was that they had a campus wireless network, but didn't let students use their own laptops on it. They also shut down unused ethernet jacks too. My job's network has the opposite problem, it is not locked down enough. So, I get to run around w/ virus problems all the time. I've kinda seen it from both sides, and I'd rather be on the too open side than the iron grip side. High speed internet.... better than coffee...
