Aloysius Posted October 12, 2005 Posted October 12, 2005 That's it, I'm completely disallusioned with college. I've been promised a place of actual respectable education for years as I complained at the pointlessness of high school. Now, I'm promised that it's only freshman classes and it will get better. Maybe it's time I put actions where my words are. Maybe it's time I go make something out of myself for real. Maybe it's time I heed my calling and go do something important with my life... If that freshman seminar teacher gives me even one smirk of dark sarcasm in class tomarrow, I'm standing up and declaring my droping-outage from college. I wonder what the refund-policy is at this place...
Theoketos Posted October 12, 2005 Posted October 12, 2005 Al, is it you or your parents paying for College? If it is your parents, then maybe you should follow their advice. And maybe you should try Benedictine College. Talk about an awesome community.
Aloysius Posted October 12, 2005 Author Posted October 12, 2005 my parents are paying for the first two years, which makes me feel even worse. I can handle wasting my own money... but I feel really bad wasting theirs. I think I could get a lot further if I could just take the $20,000/yr they're payin to the college and give it to me so I can use it to jumpstart something that might actually matter... come on now... which saints went to college? Aquinas, yeah, but who else? colleges were more disciplined and focused back then anyway! it's only considered necessary in this crazy modern society... Anyway, I'm just really frustated at the pointlessness of it all. I want an education but NOT a college degree.... not only do I not want a college degree but the thought of having one is repulsive to me.
Lil Red Posted October 12, 2005 Posted October 12, 2005 al, school is not for everyone right after high school. maybe you need a six month break or something?
Aloysius Posted October 12, 2005 Author Posted October 12, 2005 i think it's absolutely atrocious that we consider years of education taking us into our mid 20's or even mid 30's as necessary for "decent paying jobs". just another part of the protestant economic system teaching us the protestant work ethic... sigh...
Iacobus Posted October 12, 2005 Posted October 12, 2005 In my area, you need a BA in "Catholic Studies" or something like that to be a director of religious ed.

Aloysius Posted October 12, 2005 Author Posted October 12, 2005 you don't need any degree in anything to start your own business.

now that I'm graduating from college and getting my degree, everyone's asking me what grad schools I'm applying to. I AM NOT GOING TO GRAD SCHOOL. gah. I went to my college's career center and all they gave me was grad school applications. grad school is not a career! grad school is for people who like school. I hate school. [/rant] but seriously, don't give up. everyone hates their freshman seminar. I hated mine, and haven't met anyone that particularly enjoyed theirs. Mine was called "Identity, Voice and Values." a complete waste of 3 credits. ...maybe you're just not at the right school? There must be a school out there where you can get the education you're looking for.
Brother Adam Posted October 12, 2005 Posted October 12, 2005 Capitalism is why you 'have to go to college to get a decent job'. Though even with a college degree it is getting harder and harder to get a job. It seems that the only 'sure things' are certian grad fields such as nursing or engineering.
Lil Red Posted October 12, 2005 Posted October 12, 2005 and al, i was serious about the six month break. there's nothing wrong with getting a breather from school before starting again. do you think that is part of your frustration? just wondering.
Aloysius Posted October 12, 2005 Author Posted October 12, 2005 ehh, if there were a right college for me it'd be this one. err... it'd be this one at least about 5 decades ago... I donno... I want an education, but I hate concerning myself with a "degree" because I don't even necessarily want one of those.

stargirl3:16 Posted October 12, 2005 Posted October 12, 2005 "I have never let my schooling interfere with my education."- Mark Twain. Something to think about... (On a side note, I tested out of my freshman seminar, "Inquiry and Expression". Glad I did too.)

I know this sounds cheesy and cliche, but "we live in an information society." most high-paying jobs these days require critical thinking skills, and some specialized knowledge. This is where the college degree comes in. A college degree is a symbol of your knowledge in one specific subject. I know nothing about calculus, but in two months I will have a piece of paper that says I know something (but not everything) about mass media. My media+politics professor used some big word that explains what i'm trying to say but I can't remember what it is. ugh... i so can't wait for college to be over.
crusader1234 Posted October 12, 2005 Posted October 12, 2005 20,000 a year is a ridiculous sum. I'm reluctant to go to University without bein sure what I want to do at only 5,000 a year. Definitely, definitely, definitely take a year off.

I love learning, I hate school. Maybe I spent 4 years at the wrong school. Oh well, it's too late now... I think different schools have different ideas as to what they want students to get out of the freshman seminar. Mine will allow you to test out of math and foreign language requirements, but not the freshman seminar because they want it to be a common experience everyone has. But they allow for a lot of diversity... the classes have names like "frontiers in ethnomusicology," "finding the sacred in the every day: spirituality and popular culture," "philosophy of mathematics," "microbes and society," etc. There's even a class about the apocalypse! I had a hard time choosing mine because all of the frontiers classes looked interesting, but I slept through registration and by the time I got there the only thing left was "Identity, Voice and Values" where I spent a semester listening to our whacked-out chaplain teach us about how to find ourselves.

daugher-of-Mary Posted October 13, 2005 Posted October 13, 2005 Al, Can you give me the low down on St. V's theology department? I've heard soooo many conflicting things, and I only live 5 minutes away. All I want to know is IS IT ORTHODOX?? lol. Sorry, no advice to offer about your dilema!
