I'm an anthropology major... so I donno lol

my friend is a double major and one is theology. I think you've heard many conflicting reports because, well, the professors are conflicted! lol... some professors are liberal blowhards, some are actually good solid orthodox teachers from what I hear.

Scott Hahn is here this year I believe.

Is that a Floydian slip?

Hey, teachers!  Leave Aloysius alone!

I didn't even graduate from high school.

I own my own home, outright. I bought my first new car when I was 19 (paid cash). I had my first business when I was 14, and my first coroporation when I was 21. I have no debt. I have nice investments.

You only need an "official" piece of paper if you're going to work for someone else.

I think when I'm older and have a filing cabinet for important documents (old people have those, right?) I'm going to file my high school diploma under "D" for "Deals with the Devil"

I suppose you mean what do I do that I get paid for? ;)

Um, system administration and paralegal-type work (actually, it's more lawyer work, but obviously I'm not a lawyer, I just work for a lazy one,). I get $25 to $60 an hour.

I am scaling back on that work and switching to investments that will take less of my time, so I can concentrate on writing (which, as yet, I have not been paid much for, but it seems to be what I ought to do.)

I should also add that I live very frugally, and my husband (who didn't graduate from college) is self-employed, doing engineering design and programming, and some investing too.

I could make oodles more money, but I don't have any interest in it.

Wow, that's really awesome. At first I actually thought you were being sarcastic at me :ninja:... but since your not: in my book you and your husband would be numbered amongst some of the most successful people I know.

Aww, I'd never deliberately make fun of you! I admire your goals. That should be obvious by now. ^_^

And thanks. :)

Bottom line (we all know this!) -- you have to do what you think God wants you to do. It'll work out however He wants it to work out. What other kind of success matters?

amen to that. and that's why I'm really not feelin the college thing; it really doesn't seem to be God's will for me. I feel a crazy calling that no one else seems to have: to build cities based on Catholic social justice and economic thomism (read: distributism).

Anyway, I feel like a coward for continuing to not drop out... perhaps I'll stick it out a semester or two (though I really feel as if this is wasting money)

I donno... maybe I'll look into their refund policy

you think if I show them my receipt I'll get a full refund? :D:

Maybe if you can convince them that you didn't learn anything! :topsy:

I'll give it all back to them! lol... it's nothing substantial. they can just erase my mind of any information about why Karl Marx is the best sociologist and the beatnicks saved us from suits and ties!

hey, at least they're not trying to convince you that Peter Singer is "brilliant" and "the king of ethics" as one of my professors tried to tell me.
Aloysius,
Please add me to the list of people who are going to give you some advice. I'm middle aged and only have some college. I'm pretty successful by most standards. I have a nice house, pool, cars, kids, wife. My wife has mostly stayed at home with the kids and only worked(s) part time off and on. I manage a branch office for a construction company. Im the boss and hire and fire, here, and at other companies I work for. You don't need a college education or degree to be successful, BUT...

A college degree gives you more options and opportunities. It's the fact of life. Unemployment rate is very low. 90% of those that are unemployed should be. The other 10% are worthwhile. Employers are faced with filtering through the applicants, thinking 90% are probably worthless. The next critera is job performance. This is Work Ethic. Work Ethic is NOT just showing up everyday. It is the attitude and real action to do the best with the circumstances at hand. When the trencher breaks down, Work Ethic grabs the shovel and starts digging while advising 1 other person to work on the machine. Work Ethic is taking on the worst task while directing someone else in the easier task. I've hired and fired lot's of College Educated people for incompentence at ditch digging.

I will put it to you bluntly, from the perspective of my own mistakes and the mistakes I've seen close hand over the decades from the people who have worked for me.

If you quit college now, you will be a FAILURE in Life.

Is that blunt enough. If you can't take the situation you are in, and make the best of it, you are acting as if you are a selfish, whiney, idiot. You are FAR MORE INTELLIGENT than behaving like that. Not only do you have someone providing the $$ and support to go to college, you have above average intelligence. You were Graced by God to have these. Saints are Saints because they utilized what they were graced with. You should use what's been gifted to you.

I know plenty of priests that went to public schools until they went into the seminary. I know plenty of smart people who didn't graduate high school. I don't know any real successful people who didn't work hard to get where they are, college educated or not.

You don't get an education in College or any school. They only provide knowledge. You are educated as you live life. Your real education is up to you and is your responsiblity, not a school's. If you can't see how a college degree (any degree will usually do) will open more doors for you and be an asset in life, then you will continue to be uneducated and will continue to miss other assets that come your way.

Remember, I don't have a college degree and got ahead DESPITE my lack of a degree. Over the last 25 years since highschool, I have been educated in recognizing what additional choices I could have had and how much more potential my efforts may have produced if a college degree was included. It all still boils down to the effort We put into Our Own life.

You might as well educate yourself into putting in the effort now because it doesn't get any easier and the earlier the effort, the longer and greater it pays off. If you educate yourself now that there are lot's of reasons to not put the effort into your life situation, you are aiming yourself down towards failure, not success.

I apologize for being blunt and harsh, but I think it's very serious and very important, especially since it's so evident in your posts how intelligent and blessed with common sense you are. You aren't a wuss or a born loser, don't avoid tough times or quit when it's hard.

Yeah, I have debts to pay back to my dad and since GAS IS WAY TO HIGH I don't have any money really except for 40 dollars every pay check out of 230.
Besides, I have to keep money in the bank.

It's not laziness, it's lack of caring about things that don't matter.

what happens when you're paying $20,000 a year for stuff you already know, and it's acknowledged that what you're really paying for is the name of "St. Vincent College Graduate"?

I have a work ethic, but it's not the protestant work ethic that values work for the sake of work. I wanna know what this work is really doing, I wanna work on something I care about. And right now, the work is analyzing at the most basic level some overtly modernist stories that are decently written, learning about why Karl Marx's sociological philosophy is so good, learning a bunch of other things that are pointless. there's only one class that's worth anything.

anyway, I have this complex against working for things that I don't care about. That's why I'm not fitting in with this. I want to LEARN, I want to WORK, but I don't want this degree. It is not worth the money being paid.

anyway, I like education and knowledge, that's why I own tons of books and do private study on my own. I think the reason I've never been able to fit into school systems is because I'll always prioritize that private study, that private search for knowledge that makes everything in the classroom pale in comparison.
