photosynthesis Posted October 20, 2005 Posted October 20, 2005 I was just wondering what all your habits are regarding prayers before and after meals. When I was growing up, the only prayer my family ever said together was: "Bless us O Lord, for these Thy gifts which we are about to receive from Thy bountiful hands, through Christ our Lord. Amen." I always say this prayer before meals, but I am trying to get into the habit of praying after meals too. I've been to dinner at other people's houses, and they have different habits regarding prayers before and after meals. My cousin's family says, "God is great, God is good, now we thank God for our food. Amen." Other familys pray spontaneously before meals, and there are some people who even sing grace. One family I know has small children, so they sing this special "kid's grace." Also, does anyone know why people call the prayer before meals "grace"?
tojo Posted October 20, 2005 Posted October 20, 2005 By myself, since becoming Catholic, I most pray the "Bless us O Lord" before hand (only). With (Catholic!) friends sometimes I will pray ad-libbed (Prot-style) prayers concluding with the "Bless us O Lord." Several of them often ask me to lead "ad -libbed" grace, "because apparently they don't know how to do it, lol, like it's hard or something.....
Dudette Posted October 20, 2005 Posted October 20, 2005 It's different in my family, for grace at lunch we say the St. Michael's prayer and for grace at supper we say another prayer but I forget what then name of it is. And for after meals, we always say the Angelus. However, when I'm eating by myself, I'll just do the "Bless us oh Lord in these our gifts which we are about to receive, through your goodness through Christ our Lord, Amen." and for after I usually do "we give you thanks..."
philothea Posted October 20, 2005 Posted October 20, 2005 Since I grew up in a completely non-religious environment, I never got the hang of saying grace. I also don't eat regular meals, so it's hard to pick up. I often make sort of a mental prayer intention though.
photosynthesis Posted October 20, 2005 Author Posted October 20, 2005 yeah, grace was just about the only religious thing my family did... It's hard to get into the habit of saying grace. I often forget, and then as I'm eating the first bite of food I think, "oh no! I didn't say grace!" and so I say it then... better late then never...
sweetpea316 Posted October 20, 2005 Posted October 20, 2005 Our family has always said a common Protestant table prayer... "Come Lord Jesus, be our guest and let this food to us be blessed. Oh give thanks unto the Lord, for He is good, and His mercy endures forever. Amen." Although, I've recently learned the "Bless us oh Lord.." and like to use that one when I pray to myself or with other Catholics too.
Proud2BCatholic139 Posted October 20, 2005 Posted October 20, 2005 I pray the traditional prayer before... but after,I say, "Thank you, Jesus for this great meal. Amen"
Didacus Posted October 20, 2005 Posted October 20, 2005 I pray before meals, but not after. (own prayers) I pray before supper, with the family around the table. My 3 year old usually says the prayer, but daddy guides her thru. Started dong this about 2 months ago, and we pray our own little prayer.
philothea Posted October 20, 2005 Posted October 20, 2005
Rub-a-dub-dub Thanks for the grub. yay God!
I could probably manage this one!
morostheos Posted October 21, 2005 Posted October 21, 2005 I almost always pray the "bless us O Lord" prayer before meals, I try to pray the "we give you thanks" prayer after meals, but I often forget. Growing up we just prayed the before meals one. When I was little, we started praying the Johnny Appleseed grace b/c my little sister learned it in preschool and liked it a lot. We had hand motions and everything!

Jaime Posted October 21, 2005 Posted October 21, 2005 Of course there is the standard grace set to the theme of Superman Thank you God for giving us food Thank you God for giving us food For the food that we eat For the friends that we meet Thank you God for giving us food! It helps if you point like Superman to give it emphasis.
morostheos Posted October 21, 2005 Posted October 21, 2005 I was always partial to the "rock around the clock" grace God is great God is good and we thank Him for our food! We're gonna thank Him morning, noon, and night We're gonna thank Him 'cause He's outta sight! Amen, amen, amen, amen, amen!
