I wish I had a chapel veil...

today is a bad hair day. I am starting to see the real perks of wearing chapel veils to Mass. Not only are they modest and really cool, they are great for bad hair days!

blah... my hair has been so unweildy lately that all I can do is put it in a gigantic bun.

In OT times they wore viels, because not to do so, culturally was a sign of harlotary. Today sisters wear viels because it is a sign that they are married to the BrideGroom. What reasoning would there be for laity to wear them today?

bad hair days!!!!

just kidding.

I've been thinking a lot about the practice of wearing chapel veils. In older times, the hair was seen as the glory of a women... Now the glory of a woman is her... well, you know what I mean.

yea, i donno, I shy away from practices that foster 'holier-than-thou' attitudes and I've yet to meet a woman ('cept for the really OLD people) who don't act like that, even though they sometimes don't mean to.

chapel veils don't foster a "holier than thou" attitude.

I don't think they're necessary, and as of yet I have never worn one. But I think if a woman wants to wear one, I respect that.

There's plenty of reasoning.

It is a venerable Catholic tradition.

Its symbolism is very rich.

It is an act of piety, akin to Scapulars, St. Benedict Medals, and the like.

It serves as a witness that the Church did not begin in 1965 for the holier-than-thou types who can't bear with healthy Catholic diversity.

The real question is why NOT wear them? Although they are not longer required, canonically, the Church has certainly never said a word against them.

no reasoning needed in my book. I've encountered maidens in my day who have that feminine mystique to a degree that transcends reason altogether.

You're really fond of that blue smiley, aren't you?

Well, so am I

As for chapel viels, I like them, but if I wore one everyone would look at me like I was losing my mind. I think living with the bad hair day would be better.

I once knew this byzantine maiden who always wore a veil of some kind and they were never chapel veils. They were like different kinds of silk scarves or handkerchiefs or something.. All I know is that she had the most feminine style I've ever seen and no one would ever know that she actually had very long and incredibly gorgeous hair. I found out by accident one time and I felt bad cause she's probably saving her hair for her husband. :hehehe:

She was never mine, we were just friends. Actually I had a roommate who was all about her but she didn't return it at all. :hehehe:

Well, then. The beautiful, free-spirited, I'm-waiting-for-the-right-guy-so-just-get-off-my-back byzantine maiden sounds really cool!!

Well, we always wear scarves/veils/hats to church in my country [Nigeria]. You must wear some sort of hair covering tp church if you are a girl/woman. Not to wear them implies you have no respect for God. It's more like a tradition than anythin else and I think they are cool to wear. So, some people still value wearing scarves/veils/hats to church to this day.

yeah, and it's been required for 20 centuries in 20 rites of the church. now the roman rite doesn't explicitly mention its requirement in canon law... that doesn't really matter much since canon law isn't the source of the requirement.

most people who tend to think wearing a chapel veil means a holier-than-thou attitude are actually projecting their interpretation of what it means on the action. generally wearing a veil is quite a humble act of a humble lady which is actually very difficult to do because they'd get weird looks.

I'm with Fulton J Sheen on this one: it's a divine command from sacred scripture. yeah, so the culture back then had all this symbolism to it: SO DOES THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CULTURE EVEN IF THE AMERICAN CULTURE DOESNT.

Oh no, don't get Al started. We know how he feels about this issue.
