termitescoming4u! Posted October 24, 2005 Posted October 24, 2005
yeah, and it's been required for 20 centuries in 20 rites of the church. now the roman rite doesn't explicitly mention its requirement in canon law... that doesn't really matter much since canon law isn't the source of the requirement. most people who tend to think wearing a chapel veil means a holier-than-thou attitude are actually projecting their interpretation of what it means on the action. generally wearing a veil is quite a humble act of a humble lady which is actually very difficult to do because they'd get weird looks. I'm with Fulton J Sheen on this one: it's a divine command from sacred scripture. yeah, so the culture back then had all this symbolism to it: SO DOES THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CULTURE EVEN IF THE AMERICAN CULTURE DOESNT.
I TOTALLY agree with u on that.
tojo Posted October 24, 2005 Posted October 24, 2005
1 Corinthians 11:3-16 (NIV) 3Now I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God. 4Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head. 5And every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head—it is just as though her head were shaved. 6If a woman does not cover her head, she should have her hair cut off; and if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut or shaved off, she should cover her head. 7A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man. 8For man did not come from woman, but woman from man; 9neither was man created for woman, but woman for man. 10For this reason, and because of the angels, the woman ought to have a sign of authority on her head. 11In the Lord, however, woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. 12For as woman came from man, so also man is born of woman. But everything comes from God. 13Judge for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? 14Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him, 15but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For long hair is given to her as a covering. 16If anyone wants to be contentious about this, we have no other practice—nor do the churches of God.
In my last Protestant church the women wore headcoverings.... Girls in chapel veils

I was referring to that passage when I was defending people who wear head coverngs to church.
avemaria40 Posted October 24, 2005 Posted October 24, 2005 (edited)
Well, we always wear scarves/veils/hats to church in my country [Nigeria]. You must wear some sort of hair covering tp church if you are a girl/woman. Not to wear them implies you have no respect for God. It's more like a tradition than anythin else and I think they are cool to wear. So, some people still value wearing scarves/veils/hats to church to this day.
That's really cool that ppl have so much reverence and respect! I think I'll probably get a chapel veil one day. Where do you get one, for anyone that has them? Edited October 24, 2005 by avemaria40

"Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him, but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory?" Well, my hair is quite long, down to my waist. I consider my hair to be my glory. my question is, why would women need a veil, if their hair already provides a natural headcovering?

I mentioned that in my last Protestant church (that I attended before I became Catholic) that (most) of the women wore headcoverings. Well, at my first church, the women all had long (uncut) hair as/ instead of headcoverings. Now of course all this from protestant churches, but that's all I have to offer you. Obviously the Catholic tradition is/was to wear chapel veils...
Aloysius Posted October 24, 2005 Posted October 24, 2005 why is this the one point of scripture that people are insist upon trying to poke holes in St. Paul's logic? woman being created for man doesn't mean she's any less created in God's image. the "natural headcovering" of hair for a woman doesn't "replace" having a veil. even those with long hair ought to have a veil as well. that is St. Paul using an argument as to why it is woman and not men who should wear veils.

If men are created for the glory of God, and women are created for the glory of men, couldn't this suggest that men have a "higher" purpose than women and therefore are better beings?
Aloysius Posted October 24, 2005 Posted October 24, 2005 The Official Divine Interpreter of Sacred Scripture says no, this is not what it suggests.

Aloysius Posted October 24, 2005 Posted October 24, 2005 the Church teaches that man and woman are both created in God's image and are equal in human dignity. she has always taught this, though they have different roles. St. Paul is talking about different roles of man and woman in a family in relation to God.
Deeds Posted October 24, 2005 Posted October 24, 2005 My hair is shoulder length, frizzy and average brown colour. If that's my glory, the rest of me must be worse than I thought.
Cow of Shame Posted October 24, 2005 Posted October 24, 2005 can you substitute a toque for a chapel veil?

Dave Posted October 24, 2005 Posted October 24, 2005 (edited) At my parish you'll find lots of women wearing chapel veils. : I think chapel veils make women look even more attractive. I might as well ask a question here: in the earlier part of the 20th century, like the 1940s and 1950s, did women wear mostly chapel veils to Mass, or did they wear hats? I mean, back then all women wore hats and gloves out of the house even if they were going grocery shopping! Edited October 24, 2005 by Dave

Era Might Posted October 24, 2005 Posted October 24, 2005 (edited) You can't live your life worrying about people who want to pooh pooh your relationship with God. Go into any parish, and there will most assuredly be a few people who think you're "holier than thou" if you pray a Rosary before Mass. I read a story about someone's Priest who referred to those who came to Mass early to pray the Rosary first as "the crazies". Who cares what they think? Edited October 24, 2005 by Era Might
Cow of Shame Posted October 24, 2005 Posted October 24, 2005 that's odd. most churches I have attended have a group of people that come before mass to say the rosary out loud in the sanctuary.
