I think I'm gonna try to like... read all his encyclicals as they come out. that'd be cool to be able to say you read all the pope's encyclicals as they were published...

do they publish it simultaneously in all major languages? i assume they do..

the issues raised at the Synod. here's the document released by the bishops of the Synod which summarizes what they discussed:

--The Eucharist: Living Bread for the Peace of the World

also, i think its going to be an Apostolic Exhortation, not an Encyclical.

from the article:
According to the article, not confirmed nor refuted by the Holy See Press Office, the encyclical will be presented on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception and will evolve around the theme of the Centrality of Jesus Christ for the life and mission of the Church.
Pope Benedict XVI is going to have the most awesomest encyclicals. I will definitely be reading it as soon as it's published!

Where did you hear that? I haven't seen anything on Zenit.org or the Holy See's site.

from this:
"Ordinarily the propositions approved by a Synod remain confidential, to be used by the Pope in preparing an apostolic exhortation on the topic of the Synod's deliberations. But with the approval of Pope Benedict XVI, the final suggestions of the Synod on the Eucharist were made public in their unofficial Italian-language form. The official Latin version will not be released."
all of JPII's works at the conclusion of a Synod were Apostolic Exhortations. so, i'm just going off of what the norm is.

Nick, he started writing this well before the Synod. This is an encyclical, not an exhortation. The exhortation will come later, I expect.

that's fine, i'm just going off of what i read. but, that said, isn't it speculation that he has already started on it? we don't know this for sure, do we?

from this we read [emphasis mine]:
The first encyclical letter by Pope Benedict XVI (bio - news) will be promulgated on December 8, the feast of the Immaculate Conception, according to reports in the Italian press.

The Vatican has not made any public announcement about a papal encyclical. In July, when Pope Benedict brought two cartons of books to the Alpine chalet in Valle d'Aosta where he spent his summer vacation, there was heavy speculation that he was working on an encyclical. Are you sure y'all aren't talking about two different documents?

I believe it was some time ago that the Vatican Press Office said that he had begun his first encyclical.

That's talking about the release date, but the Vatican Press Office said he was writing one already, I believe...whether the release date the Italian press gives us is authentic is another question.

And yes, Scardella, I believe we're talking about two different documents...one is an encyclical that the Vatican announced he had started during the summer, the other is the usual post-synodal apostolic exhortation.

i dunno, maybe we are. my impression is that the pope's first document after the synod would be an Apostolic Exhortation. if you go here and scroll down to "Apostolic Exhortations", it says:
Apostolic Exhortations

Catechesi Tradendae, “On Catechesis in Our Time”
October 16, 1979

[It has become customary for the Pope to issue an apostolic exhortation after meetings of the Synod of Bishops. This is true of this document and the others listed below which follow synodal meetings.] Pope John Paul II’s first apostolic exhortation was on catechesis or religious instruction. It followed on the fourth general assembly of the Synod of Bishops held in October, 1977, which Pope John Paul attended before his election.
then it goes on to list all the Apostolic Exhortations that JPII wrote after the conclusion of a Synod. so, i guess we can look at it like this: either what the Italian Press (and consequently, the Catholic News Service) termed an "encyclical" is actually an Apostolic Exhortation, or an actual Encyclical will be published before the Apostolic Exhortation. this also assumes that B16 will follow the norm of publishing an Apostolic Exhortation after a Synod. as i said earlier, i'm just going off of the norm.

Yes, but as I understand it, the Vatican Press Office, not the Italian media, already said he was writing an encyclical and now it would seem that it will be published before the exhortation, which is no surprise, considering that it was begun before the synod.

I don't know about you, but I don't think the pope could finish an exhortation within just a month...that's a lot on info...

Additionally, the Italian article tries to reference a certain number of pages...they aren't dumb enough to think that the pope could just be starting the exhortation now, right after the synod, and already know how many pages it will be. They must be thinking of the encyclical he is supposed to have started in the summer.

I said, "I believe" after my claim...perhaps I'm wrong. Either way, I don't think the Italian media is dumb enough to think that he would be able to know the page numbers only a few days after the close of the synod. I'm certain they truly do mean an encyclical.
