Sick of cafeteria Catholicism ...

It's probably common knowledge here on PM that I attend a Tridentine Mass parish staffed by the FSSP. Many people drive long distances to attend that parish each Sunday. Well, I was talking to a lady after Mass today, and she said she wasn't sure she'd be able to make it to Mass on All Saints Day, as it's such a long way -- 120 miles. Well, if that was the only parish around, then I could understand. But she lives 5 miles from a Catholic parish! However, it's Novus Ordo, and she doesn't want to attend Novus Ordo Masses. She brings up the irreverence, improper dress, etc. that she sees in that latter parish. Such things are sad indeed, but missing Mass just because you're unable to get to a Mass that happens to be your liking is no excuse! And I've met others like her at my parish as well, as I've mentioned here in the past.

Not to judge, but people like that usually express a sincere desire for holiness and even seem to have an air of holiness about them. Mind you, I'm far from holy, but I just wish individuals like her would wise up and see that they're not going to make themselves more holy with attitudes like that but rather the total opposite! The libertines don't give a poot about holiness, while the radical traditionalists think they're well on the way to holiness, and it's the latter scenario that I think is truly sad.

People like that make me question my decision to start attending the Latin Mass. I've said on here before that I've tried to put things in perspective by reminding myself that cafeteria Catholics will be found in almost every parish and that those in the type of parish I attend just lean in a different direction than those you'd find in your average Novus Ordo parish. But you know what? I think I'd rather deal with the libertines, as for some reason they seem easier to deal with.

Just had to get that off my chest.

What if it's so distracting you can't focus on why you're there in the first place?

it'd be better to go with your eyeballs plucked out then.

I don't think that's what he meant when he said that about eyeballs & hands....

so, you think the woman was secretly distracyed by all the hot young males in cutoffs & chose to drive over 100 mi to go to church rather than be tempted? son, lemme tell you, you know nothing of older women. I worked in a factory right out of HS, and I'll never look at grannies the same

dirty old biddies....

We normally drive 60-90(depending on who -my parents and little sibs drive 90 miles and two of my sisters and i drive 60) to go to Mass (Novus Ordo) every Sunday. but we're going to drive 45 to go to Mass tomorrow. It's weird going to a church where you don't feel comfortable with the atmoshpere-i guess you would say- so i guess i can see where the woman is coming from but sometimes...

Are you -passing up a lot of other parishes to do this?

technically, you're supposed to go to your parish...not drive 120 miles out of your way to go to one you like.

It is bad sometimes at the N.O. but I just keep my chin up and my eyes skyward...If the tabernacle is present then I can look at that when things get squirrely

there's nothing wrong with traveling out of your way to go to an indult latin mass. it has a different status than just driving out of your way to one parish or another.

for example, in Pittsburgh the indult latin mass is the "Pittsburgh Latin Mass Community" with members from all over the diocese. It is not intended merely for the people who live near the Church it is offered, it is the indult for the diocese of pittsburgh and anyone wishing to attend a latin mass in the diocese of pittsburgh should go there.

it only becomes wrong when people decide not to go to mass at all if they are unable to make it to the indult.

Agreed.
Its also better to stay in a parish and try to correct the errors then drive somewhere else.

Funny, my mom and I were talking about this subject yesterday. Out parish celebrates the N.O. but the priest who celebrates it is so devout, and so orthodox. My little sister and brother really need a good homily, and thats what we get from our own parish. But we occasionally go to the Latin Mass and when we do it is like *sigh*okay, now we are able to consentrate on adoring God, intead of having to worry about where the tabernacle is, whether you can kneel down to receieve Holy Communion, and the guys in back of you whoes little kids are asking for the purple crayon to color in Barney.

Dave that was a well written post. Ironically your fellow mass goer has become a cafeteria catholic, even though I share her sentiments.

If its good enough for the Church, maybe you shoud reconsider. :)

I drive to another parish (it's not terribly out of the way) because I really don't like the way the other church is inside (no missalettes, no tabernacle in sight, etc.) the church I go to really helps me focus on what Mass is really about. But if I can't make it to that parish on Sunday, then I do go to the one that is closer (even if I don't like it as much)
