Dreamweaver Posted November 15, 2005 Posted November 15, 2005 Question: How many kids with ADD does it take to change a lightbulb?? Answer: Hey, lets go ride bikes!!! I swear that I have an undiagonosed case of mild ADHD, that or I'm just crazy. For those naysayers who think ADD is all in the head, I'd like you to meet my boyfriend's brother. Oh boy.... I'd like to ship him off to Tom Cruise and other people who think psychiatry/meds are evil and that their program will "cure" him. But all in all, I think its overdiagnosed. I think having kids running around and playing is a healthy sign! Many schools are completely cutting recess, and students afternoons are packed with practices and recitals. They have no time to run around and let off steam and be kids!

annie Posted November 16, 2005 Posted November 16, 2005 I am the mom of a 12 yr old with significant ADHD/LD. He has been on meds since age 4, which have saved his life. I agree, if you function ok without, more power to you. But the folks who are 'anti-meds' haven't lived with or around a person with the disorder. It is neurological, and like many neurological conditions, is a spectrum disorder, which means there are differing levels of severity. When he was 3, he used to scream, "I WANNA BE GOOD! I WANNA BE GOOD!" It was heartbreaking. He spent his first four or five years in and out of the ER---burns, stitches, teeth knocked out, etc. We were on a first name basis with the ER staff. They never called DCFS on us----shoulda been my first clue that they were in the back saying, "Wow, those parents don't get it--that kid is totally hyperactive and they just don't want to see it." He is mainstreamed in school, has a lot of help, and does ok. He also loves his faith and loves God. He is our inspiration when it comes to embracing failure in life---NOTHING comes easy to him, he expects imperfection and he is happy despite less than perfect performance 'in the world's eyes.'
