homeschoolmom Posted November 21, 2005 Posted November 21, 2005
Interesting. Of course, the rosary is a perfectly acceptable way to meditate on anything from the Scriptures, but it's a bit weird that he's promoting some like that. Still, not wrong, just odd.
my thoughts exactly.
Extra ecclesiam nulla salus Posted November 21, 2005 Posted November 21, 2005 i also wouldn't say its wrong. i prefer the old mysteries though because they cam from the BVM so she must really like them! :
Era Might Posted November 21, 2005 Posted November 21, 2005 (edited) Although Our Lady did provide the basic 5 decade form of the Rosary, the actual Mysteries as we know them do not come from Our Lady, nor even St. Dominic, but were a later development. The Catholic Encyclopedia explains:
On the other hand, the practice of meditating on certain definite mysteries, which has been rightly described as the very essence of the Rosary devotion, seems to have only arisen long after the date of St. Dominic's death. It is difficult to prove a negative, but Father T. Esser, O.P., has shown (in the periodical "Der Katholik", of Mainz, Oct., Nov., Dec., 1897) that the introduction of this meditation during the recitation of the Aves was rightly attributed to a certain Carthusian, Dominic the Prussian. It is in any case certain that at the close of the fifteenth century the utmost possible variety of methods of meditating prevailed, and that the fifteen mysteries now generally accepted were not uniformly adhered to even by the Dominicans themselves. http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/13184b.htm
The Church does formally propose 20 mysteries, but not to the exclusion of other possibilities. These fixed meditations provide a useful summary of the Gospel. Personal additions serve to supplement, rather than devalue, the Joyful, Sorrowful, Luminous, and Glorious mysteries. beatty07 Posted November 21, 2005 Posted November 21, 2005 I'm a pretty big fan of Dr. Hahn's in general, and definitely don't mind him sharing rosary meditations that he has found personally fruitful. What is this about discovering a new sacrament? That sounds like something taken out of context...I can't believe Hahn would claim something like that.
phatcatholic Posted November 22, 2005 Posted November 22, 2005
So what is the new sacrament Scott Hahn discovered?
what are you referring to?
Totus Tuus Posted November 22, 2005 Posted November 22, 2005
what are you referring to?
I'm sorry, I should have posted more info. Here ya go: From St. Joseph Communications
Order now, and Scott will send you, without additional charge, the eighth sacrament, which Scott recently discovered during his profound and ever-more-surprising study of the New Testament and the early Church Fathers. You will be amazed at the graces this new sacrament will obtain for you and your loved ones!
I cannot, however, find a book called "The Eight Sacrament" on their website. Someone said the eighth sacrament had something to do with Matrimony, but I'm not sure. I was thinking someone around here might know. Lauren
