homeschoolmom Posted November 26, 2005 Posted November 26, 2005 What would you say is your favorite sad song. For me, it's a toss up between "Seasons in the Sun" and "Eleanor Rigby"
Sojourner Posted November 26, 2005 Posted November 26, 2005 Mary's Waltz by Over the Rhine. The music is so beautifully haunting, and I love the lyrics, too ... Mary's Waltz There was a blind girl with braids and a black dress Lived next to me I could tell you the address I saw her climb out her window one midnight In to the oak tree scared sacred with moonlight See Mary dance with the light on her shoulders She has a secret, like a lover discovers her Guardian angel with limbs white as lambs wool Expensive perfume on her feet Blind Mary taught me how eyes can make pictures I showed her mine and then she showed me all hers "You have to close them," she whispered a warning "Be sure to open them before it's morning..." See how we dance with the light on our shoulders We have a secret like lovers discovering Guardian angels with limbs white as lambs wool Expensive perfume on our feet Mary fell ill on a night in December And how they tried then to cool down her fever But she lay so still like a child in a manger While I closed my eyes tight and prayed for a savior Let Mary dance with the light on her shoulders Tell her a secret and let her discover her Guardian angel with limbs white as lambs wool Expensive perfume on his feet
Andrea348 Posted November 26, 2005 Posted November 26, 2005 I was working a funeral today for a woman who was very involved in her nondenominational church. During the service they had a video tribute with pictures of stuff she did for the church and they played this song. I never knew the woman, but it was very emotional. Thank You For Giving To The Lord I dreamed I went to heaven and You were there with me We walked upon the streets of gold Beside the crystal sea. We heard the angels singing Then someone called your name. You turned and saw this young man And he was smiling as he came. And he said, "Friend you may not know me now" And then he said, "But wait" You used to teach my Sunday School When I was only eight. And every week you would say a prayer Before the class would start. And one day when you said that prayer I asked Jesus in my heart." Thank you for giving to the Lord I am a life that was changed. Thank you for giving to the Lord I am so glad you gave. Then another man stood before you And said, "Remember the time A missionary came to your church And his pictures made you cry. You didn't have much money But you gave it anyway. Jesus took the gift you gave And that's why I am here today." Thank you for giving to the Lord I am a life that was changed. Thank you for giving to the Lord I am so glad you gave. One by one they came Far as the eye could see Each life somehow touched By your generosity. Little things that you had done Sacrifices made. Unnoticed on the earth In heaven now proclaimed. And I know up in heaven You're not supposed to cry. But I am almost sure There were tears in your eyes. As Jesus took your hand And you stood before the Lord. He said, "My child look around you. Great is your reward." Thank you for giving to the Lord I am a life that was changed. Thank you for giving to the Lord I am so glad you gave. Thank you for giving to the Lord I am a life that was changed. Thank you for giving to the Lord I am so glad you gave.

djc08 Posted November 26, 2005 Posted November 26, 2005 I can't help but get teary eyed when we sing Be Not Afraid at a funeral.
photosynthesis Posted November 26, 2005 Posted November 26, 2005 "I'll Meet You In the Sky" by the Nields reminds me of my friend who died... That's one of the only Nields songs I like, though my mom loves them in chorus, I am always the irritating alto who asks the choir director, "Is there a point in this piece that always makes you cry?" and sure enough, he tells the chorus which part makes him cry and I mark it in my score. Then in the performance, when he is conducting, he cries right on time.
Sojourner Posted November 26, 2005 Posted November 26, 2005 One time after I'd broken up with a boyfriend, I decided to really embrace the suffering of the moment, and so I turned on Sinead O'Connor's "Nothing Compares 2 U." Worst post-breakup thing I've ever done. It induced sobs like nothing I'd ever experienced, and I was on the verge of tears all day. Thankfully I can now listen to the song without shedding a tear.

toledo_jesus Posted November 27, 2005 Posted November 27, 2005 Speaking of Cash, his cover of 'Hurt' along with the video was sad because it showed him as a young man...it made me conscious of mortality and that life is fleeting. That made me sad. 'Waltzing Matilda' is sad and bitter at the same time. 'Everybody Hurts' by REM. 'Don't Speak' by No Doubt 'Gloomy Sunday' by Billie Holiday.

philothea Posted November 27, 2005 Posted November 27, 2005 Dang, Dave... that's amazing. I avoid depressing songs. All my music is loud and angry or inspiring (or... both.)
Extra ecclesiam nulla salus Posted November 27, 2005 Posted November 27, 2005 i like sad songs i like angry songs. but i do not like happy songs.
philothea Posted November 27, 2005 Posted November 27, 2005 (Further thought...) Duran Duran's The Seventh Stranger just about made me kill myself, back when. I would have, except I knew no one would take care of my cat. I suppose that counts as sad! Ugh, just listening to the 30 second iTunes sample got me bummed. Lyrics:
Those words are all remainders Echoes growing in the heart of twilight They lay back laughing at naivety's star. Awaken all those whispers, The dusty shadow of a passing favour I wouldn't say that you were ruthless or right I couldn't see from so far. Was I chasing after rainbows? One thing for sure - you never answered when I called. And I wiped away the water from my face To look through the eyes of a stranger... For rumours in the wake of such a lonely crowd Trading in my shelter for danger I'm changing my name just as the sun goes down - In the eyes of the stranger! Can't tell the real from reflections When all these faces look the same to me In every city such a desolate dream. Some days are strange to number Some say the seventh sounds a little bit stranger A year of Sundays seems to have drifted right by - I could have sworn in one evening. And I'm not seized in desperation, No steel reproaches on the table from before. But I still can feel those splinters of ice I look through the eyes of a stranger... (chorus) - I must be chasing after rainbows One thing for sure you never answer when I call. And I wipe away the water from my face To look through the eyes of a stranger... For rumours in the wake of such a lonely crowd Trading in my shelter for danger I'm changing my name just as the sun goes down Walking away like a stranger (chorus) In the eyes of the stranger.. In the eyes of the stranger.. In the eyes of the stranger..
photosynthesis Posted November 27, 2005 Posted November 27, 2005 back during my angry riotgrrrl phase I used to listen to Sonic Youth and the Smiths whenever I got depressed...
benedictaj Posted November 27, 2005 Posted November 27, 2005 (edited) Sad songs....oh boy can I remember my sad-song phase.... Okies, mine would be....anything by Muse (especially "Absolution") anything by Coldplay (especially "A rush of blood to the head.") Btw, they happen to also be my favourite bands...or they were....I prefer "Spem in Alium" right now Ummm...what else? oh, that Evanescence band - esp that song "Missing" and some stuff by System of a Down (esp "Aerials") You know their album "Toxicity"? I composed my entire funeral once just out of most of the songs, lol. I'm glad we grow up sometimes.... Edited November 27, 2005 by memtherose
