photosynthesis Posted November 28, 2005 Author Posted November 28, 2005 i was talking to one of my Protestant friends last night. I asked her to pray for me, because I am being tempted to...well, you know. and she asked what the Church's teaching on suicide was, and I explained to her that when done with full knowledge and consent of the will, it is a mortal sin. I told her that it is never OK. she said, "Well, I can only know if God approves or doesn't approve of something if it's in the Bible. And the Bible is unclear about suicide. I would have to do a lot of Bible study to figure out if it was wrong or not." I asked her what part of "thou shalt not kill" didn't she understand, and she went on to try to convince me using sola scriptura reasoning that suicide was morally permissible, and that there's nothing wrong with it if you're in a lot of pain. BEAM ME UP SCOTTY, FOR THERE IS NO SIGN OF INTELLIGENT LIFE ON THIS PLANET! I didn't let her convince me. I know it's wrong and I am NOT going to give in to temptation. but i think it's time i get some new friends because the ones I have right now are either clueless, disinterested or not using their gift of reason!
tojo Posted November 28, 2005 Posted November 28, 2005 What kind of Protestant was she? I can't imagine ever having said suicide was okay. With no concept of mortal/venial sin and such, I mihjt have said that while it was very bad, one might possibly still go to Heaven anyways (in sitiuations in which it wouldn't have been mortal sin, although I would've expressed it differently). Crazy Prots and their personal interpretation....
annie Posted November 28, 2005 Posted November 28, 2005 praying and hoping you can get some help, even a suicide hotline, check front of phone book... Take meds, they are prescribed for a reason. Call a local pharmacist to make sure you don't have any interactions with over the counter stuff (like Benedryl or Melatonin....)
photosynthesis Posted November 29, 2005 Author Posted November 29, 2005 I have been awake for 5 days, and I can still write complete sentences. if this isn't enough proof that God exists I don't know what is
EncounterWithGod Posted November 29, 2005 Posted November 29, 2005 I pray that you get the rest you need
Socrates Posted November 29, 2005 Posted November 29, 2005 My prayers are with you, but seriously you need to stop focussing on this, and seriously focus on something else. I'd recomend intense physical exercise, and finding specific involving tasks to work on. This continuously dwelling on and wallowing around in your own grief is not healthy, and will only make the problem worse.

alicemary Posted November 29, 2005 Posted November 29, 2005 Dear one, If you are not in counseling call some one NOW. Do not delay, do not ignore these symptoms for another second. Do not self medicate yourself, that is only an escape. Go to the phonebook or search on lline for a local 'hotline' that you can talk to. There are plenty out there. If you don't have your sensibilities about you to do this now, let the group know and we will find someone for you. I implore you to seek out help now, there are others who can help you. The Lord made you, He loves you, you are in a time of trial. So please, call someone NOW and do not delay another night. My prayers are with you during this dark night of the soul. alicemary
Theologian in Training Posted November 29, 2005 Posted November 29, 2005 photosynthesis, The hardest thing to do is to let go. However, to hold on will not make the memory that much more vivid, but rather, will cause that much more pain. Your focus should be on him, but not to the point of obessession. It is hard, and I don't pretend to know how it must feel, but to deprive yourself of sleep and to constantly focus on a certain temptation is to be focus more of your energy on yourself than anyone else. Again, I don't know how it could feel, and hate it when people try to relate because they went through something similar, but I am sure that God wants you to sleep as does the person you are mourning. I know it may seem easier to stay up and indulge yourself in the pain, but the pain will subside if only you will let it. The pain will not accomplish anything except more pain, try to let it go, as hard as that may sound, try to let it go, so that you can rest. You need rest. And, if you can't sleep find the Scriptures and read that beautiful passage from Matthew 11:28-30 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." You are most definitely in my prayers. God Bless You
