missionseeker Posted November 28, 2005 Posted November 28, 2005 Most protestants don't do the whole Epiphany thing. So we're in town and we see a nativity scene that has Mary, Joseph, and the three wisemen set up but no Baby Jesus.
photosynthesis Posted November 28, 2005 Posted November 28, 2005 it is customary not to put the Baby Jesus in a creche until Christmas Eve
missionseeker Posted November 28, 2005 Author Posted November 28, 2005 I get that. We do that. Here it is not customary for Protestants to wait untill Christmas Eve so I was impressed with that. It's the Wisemen waiting on Jesus to get there that I thought was funny. I guess I am the only one who thinks that. Maybe you just have to live here.
photosynthesis Posted November 28, 2005 Posted November 28, 2005 in our house, the wise men don't come out until Epiphany for most of advent it is just mary and joseph and the empty cradle
Ash Wednesday Posted November 28, 2005 Posted November 28, 2005 I think I mentioned once that it would be funny to have the nativity scene in the yard, and a whole bunch of lawn ornaments of cute animals, dwarves, deer, pink flamingos, bunny rabbits covering the entire yard -- all facing and paying homage to Jesus. But I'd worry that it would come across that I was mocking the nativity scene.
tojo Posted November 28, 2005 Posted November 28, 2005 Convert is glad to learn of Catholic nativity scene customs......

scardella Posted November 28, 2005 Posted November 28, 2005 Well, it takes a long time (from what i understand) to absorb Catholicism... I'm only talking from what I've heard from others... I've been Catholic since my second birth.

Era Might Posted November 28, 2005 Posted November 28, 2005 When I came into the Church I didn't even know what a Rosary was for (I knew what it was; I just thought it was a decoration). When someone online explained to me, praying the same prayer 50 times, I thought they were crazy. That's a LOOOOOONG prayer. It was the same thing at Mass. I didn't know how everyone knew when to respond, when to sit, when to kneel. I was lost, lol. Look at me now.

We've always done it that way... Baby Jesus hides in the clock until Christmas morning and the Wise Men work their way across the window ledge atop the windows, but don't arrive until Jan. 6. We've always done it that way. I set it up last night and this morning my daughter asked me why Baby Jesus always waits in the clock. I told her that origianally I was going to have the kids look for him on Christmas morning (ie I would hid Him somewhere different every year) and there would be a "prize" for the winner. But I realized that more than likely I'd forget where he was hidden. So he always waits patienly in the clock...

(It was a little bit stale, but hey-it was candy!)
photosynthesis Posted November 28, 2005 Posted November 28, 2005 see, i'm the opposite. I'm a revert so I always knew the customs and the culture, I just didn't know what it all meant because I didn't understand the doctrines.
