Sirklawd Posted November 30, 2005 Author Posted November 30, 2005 (edited)
I agree, this to me is their real problem, more than the violence itself. Go ahead and make a game in which soldiers shoot the enemy (in the contest of a just war, lol), but games in which thugs kill prostitutes instead of paying them and other horrendous scenarios degrade humanity. The only thing theses games seem to have left to do is have the player be a rapist, that's all that's left.....
sorry but if you are referring to grand theft auto, the game does not encourage what you just described. at most it describes violence not uncommon to an R-rated movie (which i hope with your attitude you also detest). This all shouldnt be a surprise, GTA was rated M with a clarification of strong language, strong violence, and strong sexual violence. while violence in general is terrible, this game was never meant to be played by minors, just as R-rated movies are not meant to be viewed by minors. what you described is possible in the game. just like in real life. you can randomly kill innocent people, but no where does the game tell you. GTA presents you will freedom, just like reality. and also just like reality you are horribly punished for killing in GTA. cops, FBI, and even the army comes after you. any prolonged "killing spree" barely lasts over a couple of minutes. you can be just as good as you can be evil. what the press wont EVER mention is how you can also HELP society in Grand Theft Auto. there are taxi cab missions. you can drive an ambulance and bring injured people to hospitals. you can drive a frietruck and put out fires throughout the city, and even drive a cop car and go around arresting villains that would be doing all the bad things you detest. infact the game actually rewards players for doing these things, giving them cooler cars and whatnot. while there are never awards for "killing the most hookers" or anything like that. the only consequence from killing is attracting police and getting arrested. GTA is a mature game that presents people with mature situations and mature choices. no duh children shouldnt play it, and no duh parents should be there guiding their children to appropriate entertainment, and teaching them appropriate morals. tojo Posted November 30, 2005 Posted November 30, 2005 I wasn't targeting GTA in particular. While you're right that many movies are just as bad, I think it is different in a game where "you're the one doing evil," and not some other person. I don't think it provokes normal kids to be violent, but i do think it is one of many symptomatic manifestations of the greater decline of our culture, and yes, it's a manifestation that's easy for me to pick on because it's not one I'm personally fond of. Anyways, that was just my opinion. Like you I agree that minors shouldn't play many of thses games, and need great guidance when playing all the others, as they need great guidance in all things. Furthermore, I agree that it is deplorable that minors can't by a video game in which they murder adults without their parents, but they can actually murder a baby without them.
zabbazooey Posted November 30, 2005 Posted November 30, 2005 I seem to remember in GTA Vice City there is a part where you sell drugs out of an ice cream truck.

Jaime Posted November 30, 2005 Posted November 30, 2005 Just so I'm clear on your opinion. You're ok with restrictions on video games You're not ok with the lack of restrictions on abortions. Is that it?
homeschoolmom Posted November 30, 2005 Posted November 30, 2005 I think it's the double standard that's problematic...
Jaime Posted November 30, 2005 Posted November 30, 2005 Its just that there are so many double standards Can't get ears pierced Can't get teeth cleaned Can't get a tattoo Can't rent a car Etc
Sirklawd Posted November 30, 2005 Author Posted November 30, 2005
Its just that there are so many double standards Can't get ears pierced Can't get teeth cleaned Can't get a tattoo Can't rent a car Etc
excatly but they can get an abortion. and i know its not allowed everywhere. but the fact that it is allowed everywhere, and that in places where parently consent is manditory people are actually protesting to have the law changed to remove parental consent really pisses me off. call me crazy but wouldnt underage sex rates drop even just a little of they had to get their parents approval - ie let their parents know what theyve been doing and with who?
Jaime Posted November 30, 2005 Posted November 30, 2005 But you're cool with video game restrictions?
Sirklawd Posted November 30, 2005 Author Posted November 30, 2005 yes. minors should not be able to purchase/play mature games without their parents knowledge
Theoketos Posted November 30, 2005 Posted November 30, 2005
yes. minors should not be able to purchase/play mature games without their parents knowledge
I disagree strongly. Rubush is Rubush.
jezic Posted November 30, 2005 Posted November 30, 2005 what about the question of whether these games should even be made? and the whole issue about parental consent with abortion is horrendous. You need parental consent for everything except murder ...
Cow of Shame Posted December 1, 2005 Posted December 1, 2005
haha, but when zombies DO attack we now have a generation fo children that can defend themselves!
Exactly! We're more ready than ever for an outbreak of the undead. As for people having become desensitized to violence, it became quite clear to me when I went & saw Sin City. There were many disturbing scenes in that movie, but what I found most disturbing was the times when large portions of the audience LAUGHED.
BC4Life Posted December 1, 2005 Posted December 1, 2005
Oh, heck no! I don't like it that a child needs permission to get ears pierce, but not an abortion... It's crazy. And while I don't necessarily believe that those games make kids more violent per se (though I haven't really decided what I think yet...), they certainly don't make him more pro social. Those zombie games are VIOLENT... kids LAUGH when they play them... I don't like 'em.
hmm... im gonna have to disagree withyou on that one. if anything, i had made a lot of friends by attending LAN parties and other gaming events.
