dUSt Posted December 8, 2005 Posted December 8, 2005 How do you figure out what X is: 654 divided by X equals 95.
dUSt Posted December 8, 2005 Author Posted December 8, 2005 Wait. I asked the wrong question... How do you figure out what percentage 95 is of 654.
philothea Posted December 8, 2005 Posted December 8, 2005 Yeah, or (95/654)*100 ~14.5% Sorry for the delay, my cat started throwing up.
qfnol31 Posted December 8, 2005 Posted December 8, 2005 Math was almost my major (engineering)....four years ago.
Cow of Shame Posted December 8, 2005 Posted December 8, 2005 (edited) Whenever you have the word "of", it's equivalent of multiplying. Break it down like this: 95 is X% of 654 95 = X * 654 Move all the numbers to one side of the = sign by dividing both sides by 654: 95/654 = (X* 654)/654 Since 654/654 = 1, you're left with 95/654 = X To convert to a %, multiply by 100. Now you can do it for yourself next time. If you're doing a proof for a class, and have the correct answer (from the back of the book), but your work isn't coming out right, remember: you can always use the Sun constant Multiply your answer by zero and add the correct answer. photosynthesis Posted December 9, 2005 Posted December 9, 2005 i'm barely getting through math for plants and i can do this stuff... y'all are restoring my confidence in my algebraic abilities

Snarf Posted December 9, 2005 Posted December 9, 2005 Ah, the Sun Constant. I use vector/dimension-less constants all the time in physics problems. One time in physics I didn't see that there was a provided equation to calculate the induced voltage of an electron orbiting a magnetic dipole, or something like that. So, I made my own! Except, I forgot that the critical traversed path was the circumference and not the radius, so when I was explaining this to my professor he was just like, "umm, you're off by two-pi. But, good effort." He must have thought I was an idiot-savant-idiot. The funny thing is, I think my equation, once corrected, was much cleaner than the provided one. I just happened to make a leap-of-faith guess that happened to be empircally correct, and physicists try to not dwell on those.
