I don't know that they have. Evidence? Where is the evidence that this oath is required also or that all Popes before Paul VI took it?

The oath is not a requirement, and there was " no refusal". The rites of election etc were streamlined and it was dropped. No big deal.

its not but it has been taken by all popes since well before the middle ages. i just think its weird they no longer take it.

Looking online this is just another one of those issues that is exploited by those who want to separate the flock from the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church, using deceptive means to create a mountain out of a mole hill. "GASP! They refused to take the Papal Oath. They must be hiding something".

Yeah, and the people who would do that have hardly taken a papal oath, if you know what I mean. ;)

I'll take the Vicar of Christ over dissenters any day.

Eh, not really.

Seems there might actually be some confusion in why they didn't get crowned.

Lastnight I was hanging out with some people (a couple of profs at FUS and stuff) and I realized that I hold to a radical view regarding Church and state. We should debate that stuff some time. :)

Perhaps for the same reason we don't recite the Athanasian creed at Mass. A more fundamental oath is preferred.

"Credo in unum deum..."
