A real Catholic town in the making

If only it wasn't so far south. Where it's located, if a hurricane came through, it would flood the campus and town easily.

Other than that, awesome idea! :D:

I find that a little freakish, actually.

Things like that never end up well.

I think they're beating Al to his idea :P:

I posted something about this a while ago in the debate table ... it strikes me as being a bad idea.

It's only a matter of time before you've got rioting, pitchforks being hoisted in the air & someone being run out of town on a rail, tarred & feathered.

....will you invite me?

To be tarred and feathered? Sure! It's always good to have volunteers for that sort of thing.

In my experience, one doesn't typically need volunteers, but if you find yourself in a pinch...sure, why not?

A good friend of mine goes there. He is studying for his Doctorine in Catholic theology and absolutly loves it. It is located on the Gulf side of Florida near Naples and does see it's fair share of nasty weather.

But it is totally orthodox and traditional. There isnt too much Liberal thought here. From what I understand is that the goal of this University is to uphold Catholic traditions in the face of constant change all around us.

The issue I see is that of the other residents of the town. Having a University that upholds religious standards is nothing new (although this seems more orthodox than even most very conservative Christian colleges), but having a whole town with ordinances against selling contraceptives (or some other contractual agreements...I can't remember how they're doing that) is an idea that hasn't really been tried since utopists like those who built New Harmony in Indiana.

There seems to be some conceptual conflict between Monaghan (the Domino's pizza guy), who wants to restrict business ownership to keep things like sex shops out and Paul Marinelli (the land developer) who agrees ideologically with Monaghan but seems to have no idea of restricting ownership.

In the all and all, you have to wonder, though. In creating a town in which certain behaviors are removed through high-level planning instead of the moral choices of the populace that lives there, are you effectively spreading a message to the population of Catholic morality or of governmental control?

If the population of the town changes, will they set new standards or will there be an oversight group in charge of determining how these people will live in Ave Maria?

I guess what you will need to remember though is that all the residents of this town will want to be there. They will be attending the University firstly, and those who want to live in a socity that supports Catholic believe.

That said, I think it will only be a matter of time before some outside groups begin looking to move in and then change everything. Look at what happened with Berkley. It originally was a very strict conservative Christian school. Now its a complete Liberal throught breeding ground.

Thanks for the insights Joe! I had no clue about the specifics, except what's on the website.

I believe this town was to be near Ave Maria university. I don't want ot make this into gossip-and-scandal, but apparently there was a very ugly internal controversy about Monoghan's demanding that the college be moved from Michigan to Florida. Apparently much of the faculty, staff, and board were against the move. Dr. Charles Rice was fired from the board of directors by Monoghan, apparently for opposing the move to Florida.

I don't know all the details and sides of this controversy, but apparently it's gotten pretty ugly and divisive. So something tells me this town isn't going to be all about happiness and joy . . . <_<

It is not more orthodox or conservative than Christendom College. Some students who have been to both schools say there are more problems with drugs and such in Ave Maria.

On a plane ride to San Diego I red in a Gentleman's Quarterly or something like that magazine that some Protestant groups are moving to South Dakota (I think, I'm not sure) to start slowly taking control of the government. They are starting by getting spots on school boards and local government and working their way up. I think it said that their final goal is to succeed S.D. from the Union and make their own country.

Anyone heard anything about this?
