An Old School Catholic Message Board

A real Catholic town in the making
On a plane ride to San Diego I red in a Gentleman's Quarterly or something like that magazine that some Protestant groups are moving to South Dakota (I think, I'm not sure) to start slowly taking control of the government.  They are starting by getting spots on school boards and local government and working their way up.  I think it said that their final goal is to succeed S.D. from the Union and make their own country.

Anyone heard anything about this?

I do remember hearing something about that, but I thought it was South Carolina :idontknow:
it's very vague in my head though, you're probably right.

I love how the pictures of this lovely town look like a middle-class White Catholic takeover. Now THAT is scary.

Personally I don't see Catholicism as a middle-class religion, especially considering where its most fervent adherents live.

Here's a better idea. Have the town be run by friars/monks dedicated to radical poverty and make it governed by the Abbot. Make rent free, and have large communal meals with Scripture readings. Ah yes, and if anyone is needy, let those who might happen to own property (of course this number should be fairly low given the charity of the community) sell a bit so that they can eat, or at least open their doors to someone of a different race/class/smell than themselves.

There is a "Christian Exodus" plan for a bunch of Christians to move to South Carolina and take over the state.

I don't know if anyone's made similar plans for South Dakota, though.

too bad utopias never work. it would take some pretty faith based people to ignore all the carp from society and live in a nice catholic setting. however, if it does happen, somebody let me know? please? this state run school isn't sitting well with me anymore. :P:
A good friend of mine goes there. He is studying for his Doctorine in Catholic theology and absolutly loves it. It is located on the Gulf side of Florida near Naples and does see it's fair share of nasty weather.

But it is totally orthodox and traditional. There isnt too much Liberal thought here. From what I understand is that the goal of this University is to uphold Catholic traditions in the face of constant change all around us.

too bad their new chapel is supposed to look like a modernist piece of carp:
I believe this town was to be near Ave Maria university.  I don't want ot make this into gossip-and-scandal, but apparently there was a very ugly internal controversy about Monoghan's demanding that the college be moved from Michigan to Florida.
yea, there was. The Wanderer keeps a sharp eye on the school, and their reports reveal some rather questionable practices:

In theory a Catholic Utopian society could work

If the church is the perfect society than a society made by its members should at least have a good chance of sucess, but then again we are only human.

If only it wasn't so far south.  Where it's located, if a hurricane came through, it would flood the campus and town easily.

Other than that, awesome idea! :D:

Actually, it isn't in any danger from a hurricane flood at all. Hurrican Wilma, which came in just south of Naples, didn't cause any flooding more than a few blocks. The hurricane itself would have done little damage if it crossed right over, especially considering the building codes of Florida. The only threat is the min-tornados that fell trees and tear up less sound structures.
Hurricanes only pack catastrophic punch to low lying areas and the first few miles inland. After that, it 's serious wind and rain, but not catostrophic.

I did a research project on Monaghan and that chapel is supposed to be the largest church in the United States (seating-wise). It does look weird though... Monaghan definately has big-time plans for Ave Maria.

he's startin to see like a "big-time" nut to me

The Wanderer was the source of my info on these quarrels, though I really didn't follow it closely.
Wanderer reporters often take a vulture-like delight in seeking out scandal, especially if it involves their fellow Catholics.
I'd take what I read in that paper with a big grain of salt.

My only point with this is that it does indicate division and quarreling, which generally bodes ill. Unfortunately, such in-fighting is all too common within Catholic organizations. It often boils down to a clash of egos.

For some reason I imagine that "church" talking to me and saying that the meaning of life is 42.

It also looks kind of like a rocket ship preparing for take-off. Maybe they'll have a groovy band during Mass. They could improvise on the Jetson's theme during the processional.

Or better yet, maybe they are going for a tomorowland motif. Maybe they'll have audio-animatronics of Saints and stuff.. It can be a Catholic Disney World.

Yeah, that Church does have a circa 1962 "space-age" look to it.

Yeah, I have lots of relatives in SD, so I know exactly what you're talking about. Many people from the Old Apostolic Lutheran Church. In the area where my maternal grandparents live, I think about 1/3 of the people are "Appies". Their prescence had made things a bit diffucult, especially for teachers in the school. If the Apostolic men were to join the school board, I know a couple of my cousins would end up enrolling in a different school district. I haven't heard anything about plans to secede, but many Apostolics from all over the US are moving and forming "colonies" in SD.

I heard this design was being reconsidered and a new one was proposed. The new one was made of stone but the same shape structurally. (Besides, windows would fry anyone who entered their in the florida summer :pinch:)

At least I hope that a new design was proposed.

Sorry I have no source, it was quite a few months since I have seen it.
