Laudate_Dominum
I'm just tired of the profane androgyny and banality of contemporary fashion. I suppose this is just another aspect of my aversion to the post-modern and post-post-modern vampiric ravaging of humanity's soul. I suppose it’s comparable to my general aesthetic sensibilities. There is something grotesque and desacralizing about the popular culture in which I find myself immersed. A spirit of pragmatism and the mundane eclipses the mystery and transcendence which authentic culture seeks to embody. But certainly it is far worse than this. What is embodied is not the mystery of being and of the human person, but rather a tribute to absurdity and a perverse ravaging will. Yes, surely blue jeans and t-shirts are from the devil. I'm being melodramatic, don't worry.
missionseeker
Any specially labelled so-called "modest" clothing I've ever seen looks like it was designed for the Amish, Little House on the Prairie rejects or people who want to dress like my 90 year old granny. Not to mention the fact that most of them seem to think it's immoral for women to wear pants.

I don't so much have a problem with finding modest clothes, but rather clothes for women with body figures other than that of a twig (no offense to those women with high metabolisms).
that is my problem. I'm not fat. I just have a different shape than the average model. But I'm learning to sew this week. So soon all my problems will be solved!
jgirl
Uh, no offense to Elizabeth Swan, but I'd much prefer to wear clothes I can breathe in! I don't so much have a problem with finding modest clothes, but rather clothes for women with body figures other than that of a twig (no offense to those women with high metabolisms). Most of the things I find at the mall or at a department store can be modest. You just have to look around. Catalogues such as LLBean and Land's End can have very modest (and well-made) clothes. For professional attire, I suggest the sales racks at The Limited, Ann Taylor, or Talbots (those are for the shorter statured women). I say "sales" rack intentionally... that stuff is way too expensive full price. Oh, and another good site for professional, modest clothes is Hanna Andersson.
There are good deals to be had at those stores! My newest favorite store is New York and Company. Their clothes this season are very classy and modest. They email me a coupon almost everyday, and it's fun to play the sales and the coupons right to get massive amounts of clothes for under 50 dollars (I don't do this all the time, but I do watch for the things I want to go really cheap). Soemthing else I have found is H & M's normal line (not the one for juniors) has had some really nice modest clothes as of late. The waists are higher and the shirts and sweaters are longer. I think that's true at most places, though. I would never wear anything from one of those sites. But that's my opinion...to each his own!
missionseeker
if your rich and like this knd of clothes Victorian Trading Companyis sometimes good (some of the stuff is lovely and some is more... Socrates
So I've heard people (esp. young women) complain that its hard to find modest clothes these days. I decided to search the net for sites that have modest clothes for women and I'm not terribly impressed. Does anyone know of any sites (ideally Catholic) that have good looking modest clothing? Socrates
I think the Jane Austen/Gone With the Wind ballroom look is always classy on the ladies - hoop skirts, bodices, and petticoats.

jgirl
I had a roommate who was a modest dresser. She had the Little House on the Prairie look down pat (complete with the petticoat, bloomers, and socks knitted from wool she spun from sheep her family sheared). When it came time for formal, she had her mom send up her ballgown from Civil War reenacting (she always wore the clothes and didn't own a single pair of pants). It was definitely Civil War era style with a real live hoop skirt. I had to try the hoop skirt on, and it was an interesting experience because it never touches you. Lilllabettt
and socks knitted from wool she spun from sheep her family sheared)
Wow, that's impressive commitment to modest dress. I'm far too lazy for that. I buy lots of stuff from Hannahlise. Relatively cheap, non-home-made skirts. Pair with a nice sweater, there ya go! mariahLVzJP2
it is still possible to dress fashionably and modest. a lot of these stores some of you are talking about are too old ladyish or they remind me of the puritans. (sorry its the fashion merchandise/design major in me ) H&M is cool H&M one doesn't have to dress Amish to look modest. just button shirts up not down, and wear tank tops under low cut tops. argent_paladin
Have you thought about shopping vintage? Especially if you like the older styles, these can be a great resource. They have either reproductions or originals. One thing to keep in mind, though, is that sizes run smaller than they do today, and it is difficult to find clothes for larger women. They are *much* more fashionable than those modest clothes you linked to. They are cheaper than new clothes. And they are more modest than most of today's fashions. Good all around! This site has some great stuff: http://www.unique-vintage.com/index.html And this has some great skirts: http://www.vintagevixen.com/ and http://www.hemlockvintage.com/sales.html There really are hundreds of sites. Of course, ebay is always an option. I love vintage!
