tojo
I like nuns to be in habits. Priests, I don't mind so much if they aren't in clerics all the time, but they should dress appropriate to the occasion, and as a priest when representing the Church, that usually means clerics. photosynthesis
I agree. I think that a priest should always wear his habit when on official celebrations or engagements but I think it would be fine if he sometimes wears casual clothes too especially while working amongst youths. I think it makes them relate more to the priest as a human down-to-earth being yet always in contact with God. However, I think they should still wear some symbol, like a small cross or anything, to show that they are priests after all.
He was wearing a cross, and it was clear that everyone there knows he's a priest. He always introduces himself as "Father." He also lives at the young adult center (it's like a big house) so that might have something to do with it too, since it's his home. but it did catchme off guard.
A Mets jersey with a collar sticking out of the top would be good. I wouldn't expect the religious to wear their collars/habits 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, but I really think that they should be wearing them any time they are at a church function or representing the church in any capacity. I mean, they should have a right to be casual and relax once in awhile, like at home or at a friend/families house, but I really feel it should be at times when they are not in public, ie- being a visible representative of the church. As a lay person, when I see a priest or nun without their collar/habit, I think to myself, "Gee whiz, are they not proud to be what they are?"
I agree... the habit is a privilege to wear because it symbolizes the privilege of a religious vocation. Why wouldn't anyone want to wear it? although I could see why he would want to relax in his own home. scardella
I have a priest friend who will wear black t-shirts w/ a white portion sewn in when he's in a casual atmosphere. It makes it kinda sorta look like a roman collar. It's really cool and still denotes that he's a priest. I think, though, that all religious: priests, nuns, monks, brothers, etc. should wear habits, etc. when they're out in public (besides participating in athletics/working out). photosynthesis
my mom once went to this Separated + Divorced support group at this parish we were going to... this was back when she still went to mass... now she doesn't go and she has a lot of anti catholic views. anyway, the priest who was leading the group wasn't wearing his clerics, so my mom was flirting shameless with him before the meeting, later to see him introduce himself as "Father." She was so mortified!

As one who wears clerics quite often, I agree 100% When I am at the seminary during the afternoon and nighttime hours, it is nice to just relax when trying to do papers or read, or take a nap They are not the most "comfrortable" clothing in the world, after all. However, if I am going to the parish, at the parish, or going to someone who is sick, or doing something whereby I represent the Church, I wear my clerics, be it CCD or a parish gathering, or a talk, or anything else. It is always funny with the looks you get when going to a restaurant or the store with them on, or, especially in the car. I cannot tell you how many double takes I get, and how many people will cut off the person in front of me, because they don't want to cut off the priest (even though I am not there yet) God Bless Edited January 13, 2006 by Theologian in Training

jezic
It is interesting how some people seem to have this "inborn" respect for clerics. Religious people would have to check the rule of life for their respective congregations. Personally i think it is a sign of honor and dignity to wear them. If i ever receive a habit from an order, i would wear it all of the time. (well most of it except for certain things that require no habit.) When (certain) people especially those in religious orders stop wearing habits it can be a sign of other problems.

Can't say that I have. I pick up my pills in them, mostly because I go to my parish right afterwards. I have also gone out to eat in them. Otherwise, I have not worn them. It never has anything to do with not wanting to wear them, but everything to do with the fact that I need to get more, and have to make them last longer before washing, otherwise, I will be wearing a t-shirt to chapel, and I don't think that will go over too well. Oh, that's right, I have gone to confession in them. I think people like seeing that a "priest" or one who looks like one going to confession just like them.
