I think people like seeing that a "priest" or one who looks like one going to confession just like them. God Bless
Yes that is really sweet. The first time I saw a priest confessing another priest, I was really moved and touched. It made me realise how human and at the same time humble, they are. I guess it is not easy to confess with a "colleague".

philothea
It is always funny with the looks you get when going to a restaurant or the store with them on, or, especially in the car. I cannot tell you how many double takes I get, and how many people will cut off the person in front of me, because they don't want to cut off the priest (even though I am not there yet)
Hilarious. Are you saying you don't have to wear special priest jammies?? I think all priests should be fitted with radio tracking beacons so we can both identify them and easily locate the nearest one when needed. I suppose that might be a bit unreasonable though...

peacenluvbaby
You know I also think there's an American cultural element to this. I have seen many pictures of priests from Europe, Germany etc. from the 19th century and earlier in which they do not wear clerics. There are also pics of JPII on hikes or things in regular clothes. If a priest was at an official "Church event" in street clothes...ok kind of relaxed, but a picnic, out to dinner, things like that, diocesan priests don't have the "poverty" vow that keeps some order priests always "in uniform" Peace out! franciscanheart
from new advent: (1) They must wear a costume suited to their state. While the common canon law does not determine in every detail what the dress of clerics should be, yet many and various prescriptions on the subject are found in the canons, the pontifical constitutions, and the decrees of councils. These ordain that the clerics are not to wear the dress of laymen. They must abstain from gaudy colours, unbecoming their state. The wearing of the soutane or cassock on all occasions, even in public, is prescribed for clerics living in Rome, and bishops may command the same in their dioceses. In non-Catholic countries, synods generally prescribe that for public use the dress of clerics should be such as to distinguish them from laymen; that is of black or of a sober colour, and that the so-called Roman collar be worn. In private, clergymen are commonly required to wear the soutane. found here: http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/04049b.htm
just wanted to post this again without actually posting it again for those who might have missed it. dandy777
well, over here, many priests don't wear a cassock. they just wear dark clothes (trousers and a sweater) and a small cross on their sweater. some young priests don't wear dark clothes either. obviously i am talking about being on non-official functions and stuff. i remember once i went to a youth seminar and there was this young man who was very handsome wearing a pair of blue jeans and a white shirt. i was literally spellbound and then after a couple of seconds, a guy comes over and tells him, "Father can i confess?" i was so disappointed ... lol.... and felt stupid and embarrassed. he turned out to be the best priest i ever heard preaching and i respect him a lot cos even though he jokes a lot, he keeps his distance and he always talks about christ. shortnun
have you ever gone to Men In Black basketball games? The Ardiocese of Baltimore sometimes has them at local Catholic schools. Usually it's a team of diocesan priests vs. the diocesan seminarians.
The priests of the Archdiocese of Atlanta have a soccer team called "The Padres." They're quite good. The diocesan newspaper writes funny stories about them when they play high school teams and youth groups. I go to school with central province Dominicans. Most of them wear their habits to class and to their places of ministry. When I first started classes last semester I would take double takes when they were in street clothes. Earlier this year, the Dominican novices and some other seminarians went paintballing together. The Dominicans decided not to wear their habits. Apparently green and red paint doesn't come out of white habits very well.
jiyoung
I've always thought that unless it's absolutely impractical to do so, religious should always wear their habits/clerics. Particularly in religious orders though--I can't tell you how happy I am whenever I see sisters in full habits. Luckily I get to see it a lot with the Carmelites I remember meeting the vocational director of the LA Archdiocese, just thinking she was any old regular lady--she was a sister, but she was wearing a bright purple skirt suit thing. I was largely unimpressed, especially compared to seeing the Carmelites sweeping about in their gorgeous habits. It's just a beautiful outward sign of the vows they have taken. As far as priests, though, I know diocesan priests don't take a vow of poverty so they can have "civilian clothes." Because I know this, I have even more respect for priests who do wear clerics and even cassocks at all times. While I was on my come-and-see with the Carmelites, there was a retreat going on being led by Fr. Bryce Sibley. Before the retreat started, though, he was having his own "mini-retreat." During this, he wore regular clerics, and during the retreat, he wore a cassock. I thought that was really cool. Yay cassocks!
