catholicinsd Posted January 27, 2006 Posted January 27, 2006 I went (and still go) to Public Schools, which in my opinion are better than Catholic Schools. Your thoughts?
CrossCuT Posted January 27, 2006 Posted January 27, 2006 I have been at a Catholic school all my life. I guess neither of us can make any personal contrasting remarks between the two.

zwergel88 Posted January 28, 2006 Posted January 28, 2006 I don't really know. Public school is nice but I think it would be great to go to Catholic school too.
avemaria40 Posted January 28, 2006 Posted January 28, 2006 I went to a Catholic school for a couple years when i was younger, and have been a public school kid most of my life. i'm not a big fan of public school (budget issues, meaning we can't add classrooms b/c ppl don't want to pay taxes ), i would have loved to go to a Catholic highschool that's near me but then i thought, i only have a few years left here, and i want the faith challenge, as well as the fact that i do want to graduate with my friends (only one year and 4 months till i graduate high school! time flies!) If i had a choice, I'd prefer to be homeschooled, because i prefer individualized education, and i like to learn things on my own, i do better when i can go at my own pace. I read ahead in my textbooks though, yeah i'm a bit weird
hopeful1 Posted January 29, 2006 Posted January 29, 2006 i went to catholic schools from K-12, and the vast majority of people from my class had fallen away or made up their own religion, and like 90% of my class had stuck up attitudes, 'partied', drank, did drugs, and slept around and did other kinky stuff. sadly, many catholic schools have become to liberal as well and have become more like private schools at the loss of their catholic identity. probably a lot of them don't deserve the funding they get from the diocese. on the other hand, i wouldn't have been catholic if it weren't for my teachers because my parents don't practice. maybe it's a little better at the elementary level, but it would really depend on my kids maturity if i sent them to a catholic school or not.
CrossCuT Posted January 29, 2006 Posted January 29, 2006 Where I go, there are a very high number of students who attend it that either have a very washed down sense of religion or none at all. Their parents send them to a Catholic school to try and make it a job of the teachers and environment to help make their kids somehow saints. But if there is no effort on the parents side, it is not likley to happen, so I think that is why there are many people at Catholic schools who are just as bad off as those at public. One of my very close friends lost her faith here, but I also know of people who have found it. It just depends, but alot of the time Catholic schools are used to try and help kids who do not have a very good religious base in their life and help them find one. And in other cases, just to protect those who do.
Extra ecclesiam nulla salus Posted January 29, 2006 Posted January 29, 2006 Ive never been to Catholic schools. I wish i could go to one.
Guest bbdawise Posted January 29, 2006 Posted January 29, 2006 I went to public school up untill 4th grade, and half of 7th. Based on my personal observations. The public schools are more discilined than the Catholic ones. Which is really sad, considering the fact that Catholic schools are supposed to form you very well with lots of discipline. Most of the kids in my CATHOLIC highschool curse more than my public school.
geetarplayer Posted January 29, 2006 Posted January 29, 2006 Keep in mind that the pros and cons of Catholic schools and public schools vary all over the place, depending on where you live. For example, I live in Florida, where the education system is not very good. Fortunately, my county has one of the best education systems in the whole state. Here are my observations from where I live: My friend who went to Catholic schools from kindergarten through 9th grade and then switched to public schools in 10th grade. She says that the public schools' education is not as good as it is in Catholic schools. Also, she says that she greatly misses all the opportunities for prayer at Catholic schools. There are, of course, small prayer groups at her school, but she says that, looking back at her days at Catholic school, she really appreciated it when the whole school would get together for prayer at the beginning of the day, at the beginning of class, etc... Then again, I find that my Catholic school is certainly not without its problems. A large percentage of the student body participates in underaged drinking, illegal drugs, and sexual activity. Of the over 600 kids that go to our school, I'd say not quite 300 are serious about their faith. Every individual is different, but I'd say that, generally, how well a student is doing in their faith life depends on what parish they go to and how involved they are at that parish. Personally, if I ever start a family of my own, I'll send them to Catholic schools from kindergarten to 8th grade, and then I'll let them choose to go to either Catholic or public high school. -Mark
zabbazooey Posted January 29, 2006 Posted January 29, 2006 I went to public school for 10 yrs and then switched to Catholic.....Catholic is sooooo much better
TheOliverOrder88 Posted January 30, 2006 Posted January 30, 2006 Yep. Catholic school pretty much owns the public school. And its also true that Catholic schools have lost their identity. I am priveledged to have some sort of a more Roman-like adminstration that runs the school. The religion department on the other hand is rather liberal. I do think Catholic schools have more of a bond within students.
Ora et Labora Posted January 31, 2006 Posted January 31, 2006 It depends on what they teach you in the Catholic schools. If they teach you a bunch of heretycal junk then I would rather send my kids to a public school if no other option is open.

See I disagree wih you. All my friends are being homeschooled and then shipped to loser ville Catholic schools. Why wouldnt you homeschool them in highschool which is the age when they are more tempted to sin then any other age?! I for one do not get that. If I were to send My kids to a public school I would have them go before they get serious hormones. Thats me personally.
Tindomiel Posted January 31, 2006 Posted January 31, 2006 'Round here, our public schools are failing over 75% of their students. But the only Catholic highschool is miles away. Homeschooling is definitely the best option in this area.
