Fidei Defensor

Here is something I wrote last night after Church. Earlier that day I went into this terribly emo feeling mood:

Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time
In nomine Patris + Filii + et Spiritus Sancti.

The Gospel according St. Mark (Chapter 4, verses 35-41):

On that day, as evening drew on, Jesus said to his disciples:
“Let us cross to the other side.”
Leaving the crowd, they took Jesus with them in the boat just as he was.
And other boats were with him.
A violent squall came up and waves were breaking over the boat,
so that it was already filling up.
Jesus was in the stern, asleep on a cushion.
They woke him and said to him,
“Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?”
He woke up,
rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Quiet! Be still!”
The wind ceased and there was great calm.
Then he asked them, “Why are you terrified?
Do you not yet have faith?”
They were filled with great awe and said to one another,
“Who then is this whom even wind and sea obey?”

I find it quite interesting the question which Jesus poses to his disciples after he so calmly quieted the storm, "Why are you terrified?" Perhaps this question is one that we too should ask ourselves more often. Why are we terrified? What reason do we have to be afraid? Jesus asked his disciples this because he wanted them to reflect on the fact that He, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, was with them and in their midst, yet the mere creation of God, infinitely less than the greatness of God, was terrifying them. Did they not have enough faith to realize that God would not abandon them to a simple storm?

Sometimes I wonder the same thing about myself. Why am I afraid of silly little things? Why do they disturb me. They are nothing more than a big illusion of greatness. God created everything, and everything He created has not even one grain of sand's worth of greatness and strength compared to Him. So why should I let silly things scare me when I know that God is in control? Perhaps it is because I can't see Him, or feel His presence? Possibly. But His power and control does not rely on my ability to sense it. He always is working, in obvious as well as mysterious ways.

I think the reason I let myself be bothered, just as so many others, is because I feel so far removed from those singular events which changed the course of human history - the incarnation, passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. These great events happened over 2,000 years ago. They seem so distant and outdated. They may seem distant, but they are far from outdated.

Do I realize the full gravity of Christ's incarnation, his taking on of human flesh and becoming one of us in order to save us? Christ, the most grand and great Lord, sovereign King, took on the form of the most lowly of creatures, the human man, in order to redeem us. He placed himself in the most vulnerable position, subject to all of our ridiculous emotions which change at even a hint of a breeze. He took his whole divinity and became fully man and remained fully divine. He took on the ability to feel pain and suffering, and allowed himself to be taken and controlled by his own creation, even unto the point of death.

He died a horrible death upon the cross at the hands of His creation, simply because he loved us. His love was so great that his forgiveness flowed from Him, despite being whipped and crucified. Before the point of death, he forgave his crucifiers because he knew that we, humankind, would always fall short of His glory, and would be in constant need of forgiveness.

Can you imagine how grateful you would feel if a mere man would give his life in order to save yours? How then can we not be filled with upmost joy and love for Christ, our GOD, who not only took the form of a lowly human baby, put himself at the command of shortcomings and errors of our human nature, and allowed his friends and disciples betray and turn from Him, but he let his very creation, those who he loved most, put him to death.

I'm not quite sure who else I could find who would do such a thing, and do it out of pure love. Perhaps I need to reflect much more on how the 'storms' of life are affecting me. They may sway and cause pain, but they should not stir my soul, for the Lord is always with us, in our midst, by our side, to catch us and hold us when the world seems so cruel.

Remember this simple idea when you feel like the world completely hates you:

"Whenever anything disagreeable or displeasing happens to you, remember Christ crucified and be silent."
-St. John of the Cross

Christ gave up everything and was crucified for you. Why then should you be upset over silly things or let your emotions sway you? Remember Christ crucified, and be silent.

+ Amen.

ah I know what you mean. I think allot of us get really tired and fed up with our family, who seem to care alittle too much or won't just let me be. But I kinda just have to keep in mind that I don't know what I would do without them, and maybe I need them on my back all the time. And just remember that they care about me anyways. Even if it never appears so. Sorry bout the aggrivation your having, God Bless you.
