Aloysius Posted July 31, 2006 Posted July 31, 2006 Okay... I'm going to take the plunge and go on the Uberman sleep schedule. Every four hours, you take a fifteen minute nap. I've also seen it said it should be a half hour nap. I'm not sure which one I'll do, but I guess I might as well start out going for the gold medal fifteen minute nap because then I'd only have 1 1/2 hours of sleep per day. I think there's another schedule you have a 45 minute nap every six hours. anyway, apparently the first couple weeks are hell, but you eventually train your body to immediately enter REM upon falling asleep and immediately wake up after the short period of time without alarm clocks or nothing. apparenty Da Vinci, Edison, and Churchill (to name a few people from history) were known to have a sleep schedule similar to this. anyway, I'm excited at the possibilites this could lead to! do you realize how much extra free time one could have?!
Era Might Posted July 31, 2006 Posted July 31, 2006 Be careful you don't wake up in the Hudson river in a sack.

Thy Geekdom Come Posted July 31, 2006 Posted July 31, 2006 Interesting...I assume this is in addition to the normal nightly sleep.
prose Posted July 31, 2006 Posted July 31, 2006 Well, tell us how it goes. Marths Stewart only sleeps 3 hours a night. I think it would be boring to be up all night when everyone else is asleep actually. Here is an interesting article about it: http://www.kuro5hin.org/story/2002/4/15/103358/720 Ummm.... One thought: How do you hold down a job when you need to sleep fifteen minutes in every hour? And the "official" Uberman schedule seems to be 20 minutes every four hours. HEre is a guy who did it for 6 months: http://everything2.com/index.pl?node_id=892542
no. no nightly sleep. the human body is able, for some reason, to adjust to a sleep schedule like this. anyway, 20 minutes every four hours is probably the best way to go. that gives you 2 hours of sleep per day... meaning 22 hours of awake time!
littleflower+JMJ Posted July 31, 2006 Posted July 31, 2006 didn't st. john vianney only sleep 4 hours at most each night?
prose Posted August 3, 2006 Posted August 3, 2006 Sooo.... For someone who is awake 22 hours a day, you certainly aren't PhatMassing much.... I would totally be dominating PhatMass with that kind of time on my hands.
Aloysius Posted August 3, 2006 Author Posted August 3, 2006 hey, I gotta brush up on my latin, french and spanish, and learn irish gaelic... as well as reading Don Quixote in original spanish. keepin me pretty busy at nights
2xbob Posted August 3, 2006 Posted August 3, 2006 I dont sugest you do this. Sleep hacking as it is sometimes called is very dangerous. It can often manifest signs of sleep deprivation. There is also a danger of symptoms resembling narcolepsy since modern life alocates night to sleep but the rest of the day to activity there is little time for regular naps. Those who miss a nap report heavy fatigue.
photosynthesis Posted August 3, 2006 Posted August 3, 2006 hmmm... I lived a similar lifestyle when I was in college, but it totally wasn't on purpose. As someone who's had some VERY serious sleep deprivation problems I wouldn't endorse something like this. I kinda lost my mind a bit there.
Aloysius Posted August 4, 2006 Author Posted August 4, 2006 it has to be done with exact accuracy, if you get on an exact every-four-hours take a twenty-to-thirty-minute-nap schedule, it provides all the necessary components of a normal 8 hour sleep every day. this isn't the same as someone who never sleeps but only naps every once in a while. and I don't thin 2xbob realizes who he's up against... I don't live in modernity : and as such am not subject to the demands of "modern life"

How do you hold down a job when you need to sleep fifteen minutes in every hour?
Some of us work nightshift Some of us also get 20 minute breaks every 4-5 hours (by law) I might try this.. I sleep like 12 hours a day and have no life outside of a few hours on the computer, working 40 hours a week, and sleeping... And how much would caffeine affect this schedule?
prose Posted August 4, 2006 Posted August 4, 2006 So.... What is it now, day 4? You should be hitting the wall around now. Then it only gets better. How are you feeling?
Aloysius Posted August 4, 2006 Author Posted August 4, 2006 fantastic. of course, I'm crazy like that. my girlfriend thinks it's cause of my stubborn hard will... I don't let my body push me around and try to tell me I'm tired.
