I totally agree. I think the habits in that movie are so beautiful and the postulant outfit is very nice with the cape and the veil. In fact, when I was very young and I saw that movie for the first time, I told my mom, "I want to be a nun!" A little OT: It annoys me SO much when Maria is described as a novice. In fact, on the guide on my TV, it says "A NOVITIATE leaves her convent to become a governess..." Really? The entire novitiate? Anyway, it doesn't matter. It's still one of my favorite movies ever. (On second thought, however, maybe novitiate can be used in that sense? I know if one is a postulant one is still "in the novitiate"...Oh well. Overthinking things!) tnavarro61 34
the Sacramentine Poor Clares in my city wear (the postulants) a brown jumper, tan-long sleeves and a black mantilla. I think the hair is already cut. I am not sure. With the Intercessors of the Lamb, postulants wear long-sleeves colored teal. Men wear pants and women wear blouses and very short veils. The Nahsville Dominican postulants also wear a black mantilla...I think Julie Andrews' habit above is about the nicest postulant outfit I've seen so far.

Scroll down a little and you'll see the addresses. They don't have in USA but many in Mexico. Not all Cap poor Clares are Sacramentine. Their main charism i think is perpetual adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. They wear mantles too. --- The Minim nuns wear a white long sleeves and a black jumper, but no veils. Hair is already cut. SNJM 150
I love that our Church celebrates goodness, truth and beauty, so I find attractive religious garb (when it is worn) helpful in bringing one closer to Jesus.
AccountDeleted 3,823
As long as they have one, I am happy. I don't like wearing my own clothes when I enter. A uniform of any kind is much easier.
InPersonaChriste 517
The uglier the postulant garb, the humbler you have to become.. not to mention the more excited you get when you finally recieve the habit... just saying...

Lisa 1,350
hm... the whole thread was started over my community's postulant outfit. I actually think they're beautiful (maybe an acquired taste?) Anyway, the outfit doesn't really matter at all- I'm just excited to take the first step toward uniting my entire being with Christ under the mantle of the Blessed Mother! Lil'Nun 173
I admit I do not like the traditional postulants outfit. Skirt or pinafore (jumper) with a shirt it bears a strong resemblence to an old-fashioned schoolgirl's uniform (at least here in the UK). I don't know about in other countries but here there is a lot of sexualisation of the school girl outfit in the media. Something I have always thought to be unacceptable. Therefore as a grown woman I do not want to dress in anything like a school girl outfit. I would rather wear every day clothes. I think a demure all in one dress in black or navy would be razzle dazzle something like the modified habits you see in some orders. ETA Ok I typed C O O L and got razzle dazzle what's going on? Is this like that coagulated milk / C H E E S E thing? Or talk like a pirate day? Edited January 10, 2012 by Lil'Nun
