Luke2219 Posted August 1, 2003 Posted August 1, 2003 I've often thought this and I've pondered it for some time so I thought I'd throw in my 2 cents. I believe it is breaking the 4th and 5th commandments. CCC 2234: God's fourth commandment also enjoins us to honor all who for our good have received authority in society from God. It clarifies the duties of those who exercise authority as well as those who benefit from it. CCC 2238: Those subject to authority should regard those in authority as representative of God.... CCC 2239: It is the duty of citizens to contribute along with the civil authorities to the good of society in a spirit of truth, justice, solidarity, and freedom. So, we should follow the speed limit because it it the law, and it is not contrary to God's commandments. CCC 2269: Unintentional killing is not morally imputable. But one is not exonerated from grave offense if, without proportionate reasons, he has acted in a way that brings about someone's death, even without the intention to do so. From this we see, that speeding withouth proportionate reasons is a grave offense if it brings about someone's death. Speeding endagers lives which makes it sinful. Going with the flow of traffice is probably okay becasue going slower might be unsafe. We must be careful though and judge whether we could in fact safely travel the posted speed, or if we're just rationalizing and ultimately contributing to the problem. A life or death situation may be a "proportionate reason" to speed. But that would be up to your perfectly formed conscience to discern. For everyday use, it is a sin. How big a sin? I don't belive 5mph over the speed limit is speeding. I call it margin of error, but I may just be rationalizing because I do have a lead foot. The seriousness would have to deal with how dangerous it was. (School zone, pedestrians, weather, narrow road, curvy road, ect.) Probably over 25mph is gravely wrong. But normal speeding is probably only venial. Confession is for all sins, but only mortal sins have to be confessed. If you are deliberately ommitting speeding because you don't belive it is sinful, then that might make a difference. But I think that for most of us, it can be ommitted if we have more painful sins on our soul at the time. It's hard for me to admit all this because I also belive that "I can speed safely." But, legitimate authority has made the laws, and I am bound to follow them. And the times that I speed a lot or in dangerous conditions, I'm also unnessesarily endangering my life and the lives of others.
Winchester Posted August 1, 2003 Posted August 1, 2003 I don't believe it, I know it. The key is to know the limits of the road, conditions and your own. Speeding in a nieighborhood is rarely safe (if ever). Going 30 is unsafe in a neighborhood, it's just the most common limit. That doesn't mean it's safe.

cmotherofpirl Posted August 1, 2003 Posted August 1, 2003 Speaking of speeding, please pray for Lance who was walking up the street and hit by 2 girls turning a corner at about 30 mph Wednesday. THe car's bumper dragged him, they stopped, backed up and left him for dead. He survived with a crushed shoulder. He got out of the hospital today, but went into seizures. He is one of our band groupies. :rolleyes:
